To all our Aussie and Kiwi members, wishing you all well on ANZAC Day. Not sure how the Int'l date line works, so I may be a day late or early.

Haunting and beautiful. Thanks for posting. I just read up on ANZAC Day; more than 56,000 Allies were lost in this 8 month campaign at Gallipoli, about the same number of US troops lost in Viet Nam.

Polly (P.J.) Harvey wrote a terrific song cycle based on the reminiscences of WWI vets: Let England Shake. The song The Colour Of The Earth is explicitly about the ANZAC Gallipoli battle.

About 20 years ago I visited Gallipoli and the ANZAC cemetery, had never heard about it before. It's quite a sight...

Thanks Brad, great song choice, "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is, IMO, one of the most authentic songs about war & one of the most moving.

No public attended memorial yesterday and the traditional ANZAC day march didn't go ahead due to the Covid-19 situation.

Thanks for bringing up the PJ Harvey album QS - a pleasant surprise to find Mick Harvey (Nick Cave's long time right hand man) involved.

In terms of other songs about war, I really like this one from a man who has been lauded in these pages in the past - Joe Pug, a Guild player.

My late father was Royal Australian Air Force.
In 1968-70 we lived in Paris when my father worked at the Air Attache.
Together with the staff and families of the Australian Embassy we traveled by bus to Villers Bretonneux on ANZAC Day.
The school children sang for us and gifts were exchanged.
I'll never forget it.

Wow, that was heavy! I had always considered Gallipoli a relatively minor event of WWI. I'd never viewed it from the Aussie and Kiwi side.
Thanks for posting.

Oops! This should have been attached to Zelja"s posting. But you get the idea, right?

...or maybe to Brad's original post. Yeah.

I have always found the words of the Turkish commander Ataturk regarding Gallipoli incredibly moving.

Another great Bogle song that evokes war in a similar vein:

I love that video! It's a two-for-one: you get an a capella version, with handclaps, followed by the studio recording from the album. The initial camera shot accompanying the studio performance always gets me.
