Hey folks. This is a little arcane, but I was doing some string changing and truss rod adjustment on my F512 this afternoon outside (lovely day for some luthierie...)

I was wondering if anyone else had initials in the wood (with a ball point, it seems). Mr. CP seems to have done this on both my truss rod cutouts. Are these someone's initials, you think? My guitar is a Tacoma version. I'll pop off the TRC on my G312NT later (Westerly) and see if it's got 'em. I can't recall, but I don't think so.

Did I mention that I LOVE this guitar!!!!!!!!! Dang, it sounds good with a fresh set of EXP PBs!!!

My G-312 has no initials under the truss rod cover. I think it's a discrete form of personalization to identify it in the case of theft.

My wife had me "chipped" just in case. I haven't noticed any initials on any of my guitars.

Hadn't thought of that, Mark. Theft protection.

Well, I bought this guitar new. I assume this was done at the factory, but it's possible the store I bought it from did it (I doubt it though).

Cool, guys. Default, what kind of chip are you talking about?

Chaz,
It seems Tacoma had continued the idea of neck-setters scribing their own initials onto the rod recess. There are many signed as "JT" , toward the end of the Westerly era.

Sort of like signing one's painting, or "Inspected by No. 28" ? :)

I think it is under the lacquer, John, though I'm not positive. That certainly supports what hideglue said.

Cool. I like when people take pride in their work! :)

Chazmo,

After reading your post, I took a peek under the TRC of my 2006 Tacoma-built F512 and found that Mr. CP had "autographed" mine too! It is under the lacquer as is yours. Makes it kind of personal!

Hey, Cap!

Is there any handwriting in the body of your guitar? I found some on the heel block of my F512, as below. It says 1 F512, I think.

How about you, JH? (folks, JH's and my F512 were started on the same day in 2006 -- brothers in assembly!)

My 2007 Tacoma D-55 does not have any initials. Also, there is no lacquer in the truss rod cavity; just bare wood.

For personal identification I put stickers with my information on the back face of a top brace inside the guitar.
They're not easy to find unless you know where to look.

cjd, great info. Interesting that your D-55 doesn't have the initials. Maybe they only did that on the 12s? Who knows.

Y'know, do we have an LTG thread on guitar security marking? There was this "microdot" technology that I heard was being used on car parts recently... I'm interested on what peoples' approaches are.

Sure sounds like one of the Guild craftspersons is leaving a signature. Is there any way to find out if there's a Tacoma employee with initials CR?
