Been sick since Saturday. Very sore throat, fever, burning ears. I haven't been able to eat or drink since Saturday night.... Starting to feel weird. My throat is red raw and my uvula is covered in yellow sacks. I literally can't swallow. Doc says just a virus and to let it run its course. Taking 800 mgs of Motrin 3 times a day..very difficult to get down. That's not even taking the edge off.

Anyone else seen this virus?

That's what mono was like for me. Throat so sore and swollen that, for several days, the only thing I could consume was frozen juice pops. Took me about three weeks to recover fully. I hope you feel better soon.

I'm with walrus, it sounds like Strep throat to me. That takes antibiotics. Then it goes away. Did your doctor do a throat culture, Alan?

By all means, if you haven't seen a doctor yet, do--strep is easily identified and easily treatable, but it's also potentially dangerous if left untreated.

I thought of mono because you said virus. Strep is bacterial (of course--that's why antibiotics work!).

thanks for all the diagnosis....send me your addresses and i'll forward a copayment

day 4...still cant swallow, 102 fever...

tom, walrus, not strep, the tests came back negative...both of them
jeff, my daughter mentioned mono...she said that was the worst sore throat she'd ever had. i just can't remember who i was kissin
joe, thank pal (you're in my will to get my copy of Patterson's Birds of the Eastern United State book. the lawyer will call if i go to the white light
steve, boogie fever is like sicle cell anemia...white folks can't get it
john, taint cat scratch fever either, i think that's a redneck disease
al, i don't shower, so that theory goes out the window

i had a high fever last night...soaked through my t shirt and pillowcase. i dreamt i was climbing a mountain...it was misty and foggy, the climb was steep and rocky, but i knew someone at the top had a question that only i knew the answer too. i climbed through a terrible mudslide, and across several dangerous crevices...and finally, upon reaching the top, there was Jesus...actually, it was Barry Gibb...and he turned to me and asked "what strings would sound good on a westerly d35?"

Well, since you're pretty well assured it is a virus and there's no known virucide (at least non-lethal to humans, anyway), I can only suggest trying to alleviate the pain.
Back in the day this would have numbed the throat well enough:

But I suspect you'd have to deal with folks far less savory than yourself to get ahold of any of its former active ingredient.
It's illegal anyway.

As far as legal throat anesthetics, you might wanna try this:

Or if. like Lenny Bruce, you "Can't stand the taste of the stuff", you might wanna consider one of these:

It recently replaced beer bongs as the ingestion method of choice at 3 out of 4 party schools.
Can half a million college kids be wrong?

If I weren't concerned by the veer threat, I'd say damn shame... it probably had less of a negative impact of one's health back then, than the 44grams of corn syrup sugar in today's can.....
But I'm very concerned by the veer threat.

Wow.
24 hours and nothing new from Yoko.
Either he's really, really sick, or....or....the alternative is almost unthinkable:
He's telling Barry Gibb what kind of strings to put on his guitar.

you guys kill me...you're all virus-like

ok...update as of thursday pm....still feel crappy, throat still on fire....started antibiotics last night...HOWEVER....able to ingest a small amount of cold yogurt...still very painful to swallow

i visited the doctor today, and he looked into my throat and literally said "wow..it red in there" (harvard teaching hospital i might add)
so, he suspects it could be viral...and maybe herpes simplex (cold sores) inside my throat. so he put me on an antiviral med.

***someone explain how a scenario like this is possible from a major boston/harvard teaching hospital***

Symptom: patient unable to swallow and ingest food. patient has to spit out his own saliva because he cant swallow. patient throat is red raw with ulcers and lesions on the roof of the mouth, throat, and "boxing bag" as he called it.

Treatment: prescribe the biggest horse pill you can give for the patient to take 3 times a day for 5 days.

wtf?

That "treatment" is outrageous! And this guy is probably making triple your salary! No spray that could help? No injection?

Sounds like a Three Stooges episode, although I'm sure it's not funny at all for you. Here's hoping (again!) that this thing goes away soon!
