I got an email asking if I wanted to sign up for the chance to evaluate and review Elixir strings through some affinity program they have with Strings and Beyond. So I went to the website and accepted, and I got an email yesterday telling me they're sending me strings to test, which arrived today.

So that's cool. Unfortunately for them, I just restrung, so it'll be a few weeks before I get to this. But it's kind of cool to be asked.

Anybody else?

No. I'm not worthy. :(

Interestingly, the strings themselves were not shipped from Strings and Beyond, but from a logistics warehouse, in a comically large padded envelope.

I did two evaluations about 7 or 8 years ago. My playing is rather sporadic and the documentation, quantification, and regularity/regimentation of the whole deal made me glad I did it. They kept asking for more but it's just too much for me. I'd just rather play my guitar when the mood strikes me. And which guitar depends on the tuning and song.

You, however, did that exhaustive string evaluation/quantification, didn't you? So this may be right up your alley!! Let us know what you think. Trouble is, they keep key details private, so you're not really sure what it is you're evaluating. Then you gotta send 'em back. It was fun for a short while.

Not worthy, but I wish I was. I started using Elixirs on the Orpheum and really like them on it.

I did, and I don't even like them!

The Lowden O22 I bought recently came with a fresh set, and sounds terrific even with those strings. I can't wait to hear it with some EJ16s, but the cheapskate in me hates to throw out a fresh set of strings, even Elixirs.

How many string preference threads have you all written or read? Where does all that jawing end up? Who knows, who cares? It all ends up in some marketing geek's resume, then gets recycled every time they need your business. Unsubscribe and play the strings you like.

I prefer EJ16's and tend to play them until they can't be tuned. The marketing folks at elixir would likely get annoyed waiting for my annual string change.

I have been chosen. I’ve never liked Elixirs in the past but I figured hey, free strings. They haven’t arrived yet and I haven’t decided yet which guitar to put them on.
The strings arrived. I’ve decided to put them on my Eastman E10SS/v since that is one of the few I have lights on at the moment.

I put them on and immediately remembered why I don’t use Elixirs. They just sound dull and muted compared to a non- coated string. Don’t get me wrong. They’re not bad just not what I like to hear in a string. I’ll leave them on for the trial period and then we’ll see what happens I guess.

I'm a bit surprised (not really) how judgemental people are about Elixir strings. They sound just fine for new strings... then they open up, and then they last for a long time. If you don't like them, buy GHS Bright Bronze.... those'll shock you!! (did I just use those'll in a sentence??) I think y'all need to calm down a bit... :p:D:rolleyes:

I did participate on an Elixir string evaluation back when they were introducing their Nano-web strings. I had already tried their regular Elixir strings, and found that they were pretty much "duller" across the entire frequency range, but really killed the upper end. The Nano-webs were not as dull, but the top end was still not very good (compared to my regular strings of choice). They wanted a report, which I sent them. They then asked if I would be buying the Nano-web strings going forward, and I said that I would not, in consideration of their effect on the high end, and their price. They sent a pair of beer cozies with their logo on them, and that was the end of that.

I'm just not sure why people hate Elixir strings so much. Not so bright at first... then they break in and sound great. Then they last a LONG TIME. It's just a hate campaign that i don't understand. But what you want. String what you want.... jeeze....
