To my ears, vintage guitars and vintage audio gear are better than the stuff available today.

Yep, I think we all agree on that point, unless you're willing to spend thousands of dollars on a receiver or amp and tuner.

... Show her the prices of the new units built to handle all of that. That might work?
That ought to work; a revision of the beer-buying deal; "You buy, I'll fly" ... but instead ..."You buy it, I'll hook it up". J

Well I've finally found a receiver with ALL of the new gadgets and substantially better sound quality as my 17 year old receiver.......just don't have the $5400 (list) to buy it. Actually have found this one new on eBay from a couple of sellers in the $2300 range......still can't afford it! :(

And the unbiased review.

Good lord West, that's some serious iron at a serious price! I guess that's what it would cost to add the new digi-techno-gizmo-wizardry to a receiver with the same quality as you have now.

A simpler option, if your current receiver allows it, may just be an added power amp to help pump juice to those extra speakers, in addition to a speaker selection box - iPod docking and satellite radio be damned!

Actually, I was searching for a receiver with similar distortion levels to the one I have. THD on mine is .003, most of these things have about 10-20 times more distortion or more. This receiver caught my eye as it was tested at .0003 by "Audioholics", or ten times less than the one I have. I can get a dual zone much cheaper, but not with .003 THD. I would prefer to stick with Yamaha for many reasons, for one, it matches my other equipment. For another.....it's good equipment. The one I've got is still going very strong, but eventually I'll want more capability......and we do listen to a lot of XM and I'd like to drive the patio speakers seperately.

I bought a pair of these for the patio.

I see. Okay, I'll just throw this out as another inexpensive, simpler option just for sh--s and grins.

Perhaps you already know about Wireless Media Players? If you have a wireless router for your computer, you can attach a wireless media player to your existing receiver and output all your music from your computer through your receiver. If I'm not mistaken, if you have an XM subscription, you can stream for free online. You would also benefit from being able to make playlists on your computer. Therefore, your total investment would be an extra power amp, a speaker selector, and a wireless media player.

I should probably say, however, that I have not personally tried one, so I can't vouch for how well they work. I've been wanting to try it, though, because it seems like a simple way to listen to all the digital music files I have, but through my current receiver. I think they hook up to an AUX input on your receiver.
