I was looking around a large and new antique shop today and found a double cut Hoboken SF-IV w/Bigsby, all original, original case, in nice shape. The owner had a good idea of what it was worth and wanted $2500, which I wasn't prepared to pay. He said he'd turned down $2200 already, which I thought was a mistake on his part. The serial number was EN-1738. Can anyone give me an idea of the year? I've sent Hans Moust a PM on it, but maybe someone else has some information on this guitar.

Using the often incorrect dating chart from Guild, I get 1967 for that guitar. And, yeah, $2500 seems quite optimistic.

Dave...Hans Moust said it was a '67 SF-V, and yes, the antique dealer has a very unrealistic idea of value. For him to say he turned down $2200 is the oldest scam trick in the book, as you probably know. Most likely a crock of BS. I told him he was crazy to have turned that number down. He didn't want to hear that I guess. I'll follow up with him in a few days.

I agree. One a ten scale, I'd rate it an 8.5 to 9. Well cared for, lightly used, very nice, but definitely played, with some minor dings and scratches.

I've grown up around antique dealers. Men, who run the antique/junk type stores (as opposed to the furniture, lamps, china etc) are often in no hurry and are quite prepared to wait patiently for the interested prospective customer who is not an expert on the value of an item. They have no interest in selling anything at "blue book" value.

He said to me, "some collectors have deep pockets." I think that sums up his attitude. Hook a sucker.
