If you've got some extra time, check out this thread from the talkbass.com forum.
It sounds like the plot for some kind of holiday movie, but it is legit. Bold kindness and mind-blowing coincidence involved here!

SPOILER ALERT!

Basically, a young man met a friendly customer, named Butch, at the restaurant he works at. After talking for a while, Butch shares that he was once a pro-bassist, even having played on some top 40 and top 20 hits in the early 80's. However, at some point he hit some really unfortunate times and had to sell off all his bass gear to pay for rent. Still he ended up homeless, but was (by the time the two met) working again and had his own place again, though still too tight on money to pick up music gear. So, the young man decided he was going to spend a little money and buy the Butch a cheap bass to play. Thing is, the young man was only sharing this story, when talkbass members started pitching in small donations to help out. Therein the kindness part of the thread is covered. Then comes the big twist in the story which entails the coincidence. A man claiming to be Butch's long lost brother (separated in 1968) finds the thread through a google search of Butch's name that he does regularly. He pleads to be put in touch with who he expects to be his brother. Turns out, he really is Butch's brother and they look to be setting up some kind of reunion!

Crazy story! Still not complete either. Today the young man and Butch will be playing at a jam and there will be pictures, so stay tuned!
