I found this '70's Taylor ad amusing - both the Martin and the Guild are being played upside down by lefties! Interesting psychology by the Taylor ad department!

I like the "bored" person next to the Guild player. Subliminal.

And a very weird ad. Not sure if that one helped or hurt the Taylor brand. Seems off point and amateurish.

Anyone know if any of those guitar shops are still around?

Good question and I have an answer!

Hermie's, in Schenectady, is still in business although it has moved to another location.

With exceptions I bought most of my tuba and bass gear from them. I got the JS II from another dealer and I can't recall why but it was probably Hermie's weren't authorized or carrying Guild electrics. I'd moved before I bough a tuba.

I recall, when I was an arrogant youth who knew everything I recall suggesting Hermie's was committing fraud by labeling an Epiphone EB-0 bass as an "EB-0" because I was certain EB-0 was a Gibson trademark. The clerk shrugged their shoulders but if I hadn't been such an arrogant SOB I might have played it and ended up in Gibson land instead of with a Guild JS II.

The movie "The Way We Were" was filmed locally and there are a couple of Hermie's employees in the ballroom band along with a few other adult musicians I had run into.

I'm glad they are still around.

Edit: This picture is on their Facebook page.

It sort of exists, in name only. Not the same since Norm retired.

Hermie's was always the place with oddball guitars back in the day. They didn't have most of the major guitar brands back in the day. They might have had Fender, but no Gibson, Guild or Martin. I remember playing things like Bunker and Mosrite guitars there. You had to drive up State St. to find the rock and roll stuff. I think most of their money was made on school band rentals.

I claim no knowledge newer than 1975 that can't be found on the internet :) I got an Ovation bass amp from them and later a Peavey bass amp there but of course neither was a big, mainstream name at the time. (Which didn't matter since I wasn't quite a gear geek/snob either). I definitely knew Hermie's from the band/orchestra market but then my parents both taught music in the schools.

They must have moved again. Last time I saw them they had a small storefront on Jay St., and there were literally like two guitars and a marching band bass drum in there. Hope they're succeeding. Website seems to indicate they're part of John Keel now.
