I notice this in the BIN section on eBay. Take a look at the upper 'horn'. Hans, if you're out there, do you think this is a carve 'em up/refin job or just an unusual specimen? I know I've never seen one like it, so I thought I'd ask the man who's seen it all...

Here's the auction, in case anyone wants a stab at it. I just posted it here out of curiosity.

Hello Dane,

Well, I haven't seen one like that either!
Have no idea what's up with that. Almost looks like a practical joke; and a very good one if that's the case! But it doesn't look like a refinish job to me. Probably original!

Sincerely,

I don't think it's any type of fakery by looking at the other pictures in the description. I'd be interested to see it first hand.

The description is clearly for another guitar available from the same seller. How long does it take to double check your description?

Under close examination I notice some items on this guitar are not stock. Looking closely at the pickup it can be seen that the standard HB pickup 2+1 mounting bezel has been replaced with a "non-stock" 1 + 1 bezel. That makes me suspect that the Dimarizo was not stock. The other item I just noticed is that their is a plug in the pickguard between the Vol and Tone knob. After looking at other S65 D pictures I see the mini switch used for a splitting the HB coils is missing.

Given these changes I am wondering if other items on this guitar have been refinished.

Hello Mike,

The model S-65D didn't have a separate pickup bezel, since the pickup was mounted straight into the pickguard. That probably means that the instrument did get another pickup (for which they didn't need the mini-switch) at some point but that in itself is not an indication for a refinish. Without holding the guitar in my hands I can't really judge the quality of the finish, but from the picture I would say this looks like a factory finish. It's not easy to do a good finish and in my opinion it would almost be too costly and too much trouble for an instrument in this price range. Unless you could do it yourself and it would really be a lot of work!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
