But because of our history there is nothing like the american pride in our country - unfortunately, because there are a lot of things we could be very proud of in our history - only we are not.
Hi Michael; I respect your humility but would like to point out that America's pride in itself is always strongest when it is able to overlook its own shortcomings.
In 1970, I visited St Michael's Church in Fulda c. 820 ... when it was built, North America was wilderness inhabited by real 'Americans' ... it would be nearly another 800 years before churches were widely built in North America:
In 1970, I also sat on Philosopher's Hill ... across from this building and considered that when it was built, the US didn't exist politically ... it was still a collection of hunters, small farmers, fishermen, and a place where slavery was legal. 1,600 years before it was built, the Germanic people had been fighting for hundreds of years to hold off enslavement by the Romans.
I had driven to both Fulda and Heidelberg in one of these ... a 1958 MB 219 (W105) except mine had a chocolate top, tan body, in-line 6-cylinder engine, 4-speed on the column, and walnut trim on the dash, console, and doors. It did 65mph/100kph at 20 miles per gallon of benzine.
When my '58 Benz was being built, General Motors was making these: a 1957 Buick Roadmaster.
I note that MB is selling cars all around the world and that GM can barely give its products away. As the poet (no, not Goethe  ) said:
"...For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'."
btw: my brother is going to see the current version of the British Walkers ... you might want to check
this link ... see if you recognize any of the original band members .... might look at who has Friended them ... pretty impressive.
