I gave up drinking at the beginning of the year. I feel better, and I've lost some weight.

I've been drinking, mainly beer, since high school. You know, it was the cool thing to do. Drinking became a habit and part of my identity.
I've always enjoyed drinking cold beer. Usually, one to three beers unless it's college football season. But over the past year, I've been making some changes. And I've decided that drinking is no longer part of my identity.

The upside is that I'll be able to purchase more guitars with the money I save. Good luck with the quitting, dreadnut.

So now I'm under Doctors orders to quit drinking beer, he says its gonna kill me if I keep it up. That sounds as good as any reason to quit. But its not like I'm drinking myself into oblivion, I have 2 maybe 3 beers a night.

But I have quaffed a great quantity of frosty cold ones in my time. I rarely drink anything but beer. Started in high school, when they lowered the drinking age to 18. We were going into the bars as seniors in high school.

Then there was the Navy - you just gotta drink beer!

Zoom ahead several years and they came out with craft beers and craft breweries. Great beers but oh good, now I can pay higher prices for beer.

Anyway, I quit yesterday and. It's not like I'm climbing the walls or anything.

Finally, I could think of worse things to die from than a cold beer in the belly.
Very smart move, Dred. If your doc says to quit, you should listen to s/he. My son died from liver disease and other related problems at the age of 41, after drinking too many beers, starting in college.

I know what you are saying about the Navy. I took up drinking and smoking in the Navy. I gave up smoking a long time ago but I'm still drinking a little.

I'm 72 and every time I go in for a checkup the doctor asks me how much I'm drinking. I tell him a beer in the afternoon and a mixed drink in the evening most days but not every day. Sometimes a couple more on Saturday nights if I'm in a bar. He always says keep up the good work and don't start drinking like it is Saturday all week long.

So far so good. If he ever tells me to quit, I will. Shouldn't be a problem if he does. I didn't drink much when we had kids in the house and I was working, I just kicked it up a little when I retired.

Alcohol messes with your DNA, increases the risk of cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, blood clots, etc. Alcohol companies commissioned a study years ago to find the "healthy" amount for consuming. After analyzing tons and tons of studies, there was none.
