I am starting this thread to gather data about the publication history of The Guild Guitar Book by Hans Moust. I will try and edit things down into one post that will probably become a sticky. I am interested in the kind of details a book buyer would be interested in - editions and printings and how to tell if it is not obvious. This is not a place to discuss current prices or hopes of Volume II.
I am working from memory but I know a web search or visit to my library will fill out some of the missing data or correct my memory.

There is only one published edition. There are (at least) four formats.

The first edition was a hardcover published by Hal Leonard in 1995. The number of hardcover printings is unknown.

There are at least two softcover, trade paperback printings.

One was done in 1999 by Hal Leonard.

One was done in ? by ?.

Two of the softcover printings can be distinguished by the binding and other construction deals. @GAD will remind me of where he has discussed this before and I will pull some of that material here.

The number of softcover printings is to be determined as is whether there were more than two.

A Kindle edition, based upon the 1999 softcover was published in ?

For those who want to play at home the copyright page often contains edition and printing information. I'll elaborate when I have checked mine.

For those with hairs to split I recall a distinction between a nth printing and a reprint. My recollection is that reprint is used when a book has been out of print (i.e. not available from the publisher) for some period of time. If that memory is correct then I think the most recent softcover edition is actually a reprint.

You beat me to it. I was thinking of a nice meaty blog post on this topic. :)

Here's all three print versions that I know of. Please ignore the dog hair.

Middle one is the older softcover, right? Is it a sewn binding whereas the right one is a glued binding?

Correct. I have no idea how many of each were printed, but that middle one seems to be pretty uncommon. I only learned about it when Hans signed one for me that he had gotten while I was in The Netherlands.

I have also laid eyes on the rarest of the rare: the original sheets that Hans made that would be used to make the books! I'm pretty sure you won't find that one on Ebay, though. :) I might even have a picture somewhere...

Specs on my thinner soft cover are approximately:

11-11/16 x 9-3/16 x 7/16 inches
297 x 235 x 10 mm

End flaps fold in to full page size with Acknowledgments.

I would assume Hal Leonard is mentioned somewhere?
No, because that is the 1995 handcover book Hans himself published! The hardcover also had no barcodes or ISBN numbers on the back of the cover:

1609348815369.png

See: http://www.guitarchives.nl/guitarsgalore/guitarchives_detail.php?id=127

But please see what Hans said about it in 2006:

"Originally I did a Limited Edition Hardcover version and a softcover version. These were both published by GuitArchives Publications and I gave the exclusive distribution rights for the softcover version to Hal Leonard. When the softcover sold out I negotiated a new deal with Hal Leonard which gave them the right to publish a new printing and that's the one that you see in the bookstores and on Amazon.com these days. "

1609347218647.png

Softcover-Versions I found:

Publisher (? That should read Distributer I think): Music Sales Ltd (March 1st, 1996)
ISBN-10 : 0793552206
ISBN-13 : 978-0793552207
Size: 30.48 x 24.13 x 1.27 cm

So it sounds like the first version softcover were distributed by both "Music Sales Ltd" (I guess only for the UK) and "Hal Leonard Corp" with the same ISBN on the same day.

Publisher (? That should read Distributer I think): Hal Leonard Corp; Not Indicated Edition (March 1st, 1996)
ISBN-10 : 0793552206
ISBN-13 : 978-0793552207
Weight: 975 g
Size: 30.48 x 24.13 x 1.27 cm (11.81 x 9.27 x 0.58 inches ?)

1609347679406.png

After those the Hal Leonard number and the ISBN number changed. I guess for the reason Hans described above.

Publisher: Hal Leonard (November 1st, 1999)
ISBN-10 : 0634009664
ISBN-13 : 978-0634009662
Weight: 816 g
Size: 29.85 x 23.8 x ? cm (10.98 x 9.13 x 0.58 inches ?)

1609347838759.png

1609971036628.png

1609294340867.png

Those 1999 versions obviously still have the flaps on the cover pages:

1609971469625.png

Some webpages show a year 2000 version as well:
Publisher : Hal Leonard Corporation (Dec, 31st 2000)
ISBN-10 : 0634009664
ISBN-13 : 978-0634009662
Dimensions : 29.85 x 23.80 x ? cm

According to Hans there was another reprint in 2010 and the books were in shops in 2011.

I just checked my 2011 bought book which I assume was from that 2010/2011 reprint:

Publisher: Hal Leonard Corporation (2010)
ISBN-10 : 0634009664
ISBN-13 : 978-0634009662
Dimensions : 29.85 x 23.25 x 1.0 cm

And they have no longer flaps on the cover pages.

Page 2: Same info like on 1999 one.

1609294140705.png

3rd cover page: Now printed in China vs Hong Kong:

1609294211952.png

Back cover: The price dropped from U.S. 39.99 to $32.99 !

1609294258832.png

Kindle Version based on November 1st, 1999 version: US$25.99

Apple Book Version based on November 1st, 1999 version: US$25.99

While we wait for me to look at my own copies...

This is the copyright page from a library book that was at hand.

page.jpg

Circled, from top down.

The copyright data and copyright holder.
The publisher.
The date of publication and declaration that it is a First Edition.
The printing. (I believe this is the 6th printing but if anyone thinks I am wrong, they might be right).

Note in general, not all book publishers provide all of this information, especially when you get into books that are several decades old. Sometimes a First Edition is not called out but must be inferred from the copyright date and the publication date being the same.

I note that the publisher of the hardcover edition was not Hal Leonard.

I didn't know Apple books existed. Interesting side discussion as to the copyright or licensing status of different electronic versions. At what point did the intellectual property associated with a recording become covered by the same license whether the recording was released on LP, cassette tape, 8 track tape, CD or streamed?

Mine is the "gluebound" version, no idea if it's the most common version, but it might be. Copyright 1995 Guitararchives, published by Hal Leonard.

It's too bad that there is no book on the more recent Guild history and models. My Guilds were built in New Hartford and that's more interesting to me than older vintage.

Cover imagery's the same on all (that I've seen) but because the later softcovers without foldout (I assume the '99 printing) were also printed on thinner stock, they are actually physically thinner, as seen between GAD's copies.

Also, because it's thinner, the imaging of the back cover wraps around the spine differently. GAD posted a pic of it a couple of years back.

I got mine at a bookstore about a year after I got the D25, Christmas '97 or shortly after, I think? So I've always been sure it's the "first" softcover version. Mine's got the Hal Leonard badge on the back, ISBN's 0-7935-5220-6. 5/8" thick.

Both front and back covers have "fold-outs"; and "Acknowledgements" are printed on the inside folds of both covers.

Cover price $39.95

Wow, finally, I'm posting from the comfort of home where the book is at hand. Well, after I get it out of the safe, anyway. 😀

Mine is a 1995 softcover Hans sent me. The cover page is cut where Hal’s name would have been because Hans cut a square shaped piece out and glued another piece in its place and signed it there. Hal’s name is on the back. My cover has the folded page.

Buyers Guide?? If you don't have one, Bookfinder.com lists them from $447 to $969 with shipping. Is anyone willing to trade an old guitar for one? Seems like Hans would reprint if the prices are so high. Maybe issue a new two volume set.

Hans would have, most likely, released Volume two but I am thinking two things have slowed him down:
1. The massive amount of change in Guild Guitar production models and relocations of factories- how can one keep up much less varify research and 2. Answering questions folks like me ask
