This morning at 8:30 I was enjoying the first day of the festive holiday weekend fishing for Pike down by the dam. Decked out in shorts, sandals, t-shirt and lucky boonie hat, I took notice when the temperature dropped twenty degrees and the wind kicked up to about 20 m.p.h. With a black sky above me I fastened the chin strap on my lucky hat and headed for the car. Heading home with light rain on the windshield, the weatherman was yapping about a death storm, dig a hole and crawl in it, etc. Having lived in Kansas for several years, it takes a lot of weather to impress me.

Five minutes later, enduring a tongue lashing from the Mean Little Girlfriend, for "sneaking" out of MY house at 5:30 to go fishing, the wind really started to blow. 60+ m.p.h. 2 inches of rain in 30 minutes.

Nothing compared to the destruction out east, but there was some damage.

Across the street.

Not another Locust wood tree! We're under attack

No mostly maples around here, they tend to lose limbs, but stay rooted.

I need to get a water proof camera. I have a bad history of dropping things in the water.

Finally had a shower here and some high winds here in west Ky. Temperature dropped about twenty degrees as well but nothing like what you experienced. BTW- Some of my best fishing happened when on the water with a front moving in. The dilemma however is of course, "Do I stay and possibly get electrocuted and/or have the boat capsize or stay and catch fish :? ?" Just one more cast!

Northern Pike Esox lucius, IMO the king of freshwater game fish. Probably around half of the lakes and rivers in Wisconsin have some. The Fox River which runs through town is full of them. 36-40 inches, 25-30 lbs. is considered a big fish. 40-44 inches around 35 lbs. is about as big as they get here. I caught 5 in the 24-36" range that morning, 5 or 6 little ones. They were hitting like crazy as that cold front rolled in. They feed in shallow water and prefer sunlight, hit the line like a torpedo and usually rear up out of the water shaking their head. Big ones will usually head for cover or deep water after the initial flurry and can take a while to land. They have a full set of sharp teeth, powerful jaws and destroy tackle. As much fun as you can have with your clothes on.

Now that's a man who knows what he's fishing for!! Good stuff Doc. I imagine you catch and release?

I'm a salt water guy, if I can't eat it I don't fish for it.

My favorite bait is cute little precious gemstones set in a pendant, or earrings, or a ring, or best, a matched set of all 3. :D
