The Taurus SHO I had was 200hp out of a 3.2 liter Yamaha V6. Rumor was it was detuned down to 200hp so as not to be faster than their " fast " cars at the time.
The worst was when they stank of Armor All after getting detailed by the used car manager's crew. And the plastic got shiny and felt oily. That was a terrible era for GM interiors. They had the cheapest flimsiest looking hard plastics everywhere, even in the Corvette!
I was selling Fords in '91-'92, it was said to be for reliability and mileage/emissions by a dealer mechanic. At the time it was still pretty outrageous in a passenger car. Pretty sure it was the car that the automotive journals first called a "Q-ship", after the disguised armed merchant cruisers that preyed on U-boats in WWI & WWII.The Taurus SHO I had was 200hp out of a 3.2 liter Yamaha V6. I used to go to various track days at Watkins Glen....there were a bunch of those SHO's...and they would fly by my euro roadsters while the driver had the windows up and A/C on.I was selling Fords in '91-'92, it was said to be for reliability and mileage/emissions by a dealer mechanic. Yamaha built the engines based on an existing Ford block. The heads were all Yamaha.I used to go to various track days at Watkins Glen....there were a bunch of those SHO's...and they would fly by my euro roadsters while the driver had the windows up and A/C on.
I think Yamaha or Mercury Marine did the heads on them.
I drove a host of the first generation examples when I lived in the SF Bay Area one summer working as an auto detailer for a dealership in Alameda. They were so much fun and super fast! The Taurus SHO I had was 200hp out of a 3.2 liter Yamaha V6. Rumor was it was detuned down to 200hp so as not to be faster than their " fast " cars at the time.
