Hi Folks, I've run across this topic in a couple of threads but am wondering if anyone knows definitely what the nut and saddle material is that Guild used at Westerly in the '80s. It's an orange-ish, mustardy composite, made to look "aged" I suppose, but is it plastic or Corian or something else? My two jumbos have it and neither sound "incomplete" tonally-speaking. Was Corian even around in '84? Either I'm too old to remember or I wasn't paying attention.
Thanks for your help!

Hello firestarter,

There's no definitive answer for the entire '80s. It depends on what model and when it was made exactly.
If you're talking about your '88 JF-30-12 BLD then the official specs. called for a 'MICARTA' nut. If your other '80s guitar has something similar, it's probably micarta as well.

Sincerely,

Hans, Thank You!
The two guitars ('84 F-42 and '88 JF-30-12) indeed both have nuts and saddles made from the same material. I remember Martin also used (still uses?) Micarta as standard spec equipment. What seems unusual about Guild is the dark orange/yellow coloration they used, not unattractive, but certainly unlike other luthiers!
