Today was both a joyful yet sad day for me . I have discovered there are somethings I’m a little more attached to than I should be and my old Mesa is one of them. The Mesa was my first tube amp and has always been a love hate thing going on but it was mine and was my first real amp. I’ve had the Mesa for about 7 or 8 years now and really learned to love the boldness (so I thought) it had. My first year I had it it completely quit with no sound so the previous owner had it fixed for me and it worked as I thought (good) for another 4 year or so when I started having issues again and I ended up completely re tubing it and it worked but I couldn’t forget some someone told me ( this is one sick Mesa , it should have a lot more wallop to it” when I found someone to bias the amp he was suppose to recap it but didn’t even bother to do so. He messaged me it was done then anytime I went to pick it up he always made an excuse why not to be home and I had to get someone else to get it and that was a hell show and he blocked me on Facebook. Recently it started loosing volume in the lead channel this time so I shut it off and set it aside in another room and drug out my 74 twin reverb. Today my brother took me to the other side of our little provenance to drop the Mesa off to a retired technician who now builds them for people. Several other forum members vouched for him mostly the ones in Ontario since before the pandemic that’s where he was located and worked under another forum member who was a service guy for Mesa boogie. He made me feel kind of pathetic lol me struggling to walk with this old Mesa with my messed up legs lol and grabs it with one hand and flies down stairs with the 75 pound amps and with one hand puts it on top of a dresser that’s up to his chest in hight ! And then we started talking and I told him what was going wrong and he was going over everything when I heard “ there is definitely something wrong with it, it shouldn’t be humming like this . It sounds like there’s a grounding is going on , and there should be a lot more gain , my friend used to gig with two 80s boogies” then we get to the lead channel and he said “ yeah this should have a lot more volume than this” . It’s exciting because he’s willing to go over the amp with a fine comb and brush for say and actually did into it to find out what is going on and he’s going to send pictures along the way to prove that he is actually doing the work to it . The sad thing is it’s only been a few hours and it already feels weird knowing it’s not here and somewhere else. But that brings up another question. if the amp was “sick” for that long , what is going to sound like when it’s fixed? What have I been missing out on these last years? Am I even going to like it since I’m use to the twin? Am I going to like the twin when it comes back? C37AA349-F7DC-43A8-80B1-677794185BF2.jpeg

Never was my kind of amp, but I don't gig.

Too loud.

Too clean.

I dislike EQ's.

Too many knobs.

I'm more comfortable with a Celestion 25W speaker, or a Weber.

I'm breaking in a Weber in the most ridiculous tiny 1x12 amp and I'm starting to love it.

It's like a little MiniMe Marshall, co cute.

My experience went like this growing up.

Had a Vibro champ. It blew up, speaker died, shorted the OT, very expensive to fix back then. Had it fixed, it blew up again.

Moved up to a Vox 2x12 Solid State. It lived.

Moved up to a Marshall Plexi. It was indestructible.

Strayed from Marshall occasionally, Laney AOR, (blew up regularly, to the point where the shop gave me full refund on the head so they wouldn't have to keep fixing it), Mesa, no running issues, but serious tonal issues, weird EQ or in the case of my last one the Trem-O-Verb combo, sounded like there was a blanket over the speakers, Music Man, several different models, not my cup of tea, Peavey Tweed amps, very good, SUNN amps, good results for bass, Ampeg, better for bass, Traynor, excellent.

In fact I've settled on Traynor (2x 6V6) and a couple other single ended 6V6 amps.

I think what I'm seeing in the back of yours is 4 6L6's like a Twin, a crazy amount of loud.

A fairly massive OT.

No reverb?

Now remembering, I bought a Subway Rocket brand new, thought I would absolutely love it and I sold it on eBay rather than to bother the shop where I bought it with the problem. There was nothing wrong with it, just the tone just didn't do it for me like I thought it would.

Never liked any of the triple Recto stuff either.

Definitely it's own breed, with loyal followers.

Yours is virtually from the Santana days.

I always wanted one of these with the wicker grille.

A buddy in Seattle had a new special order Trem O Verb in Oxblood leather, real leather and wicker grille.

Gorgeous!

You got to hand it to Mesa for that, pretty unbeatable looks and wild and great covering options.

Still a piece of history though, I like Blonde coverings.

I think the Super Champs were based on the Boogie concept, with Rivera at the helm?
I have a Rivera Super Champ. That's supposedly the story, but they are truly different beasts. The SC dirty channel sound like poop compared to an early Boogie. The clean channel is outstanding, though. Super Champs also need a speaker upgrade to truly shine.

Looking forward to hearing your impressions, Jared, when your tech gets that Boogie running optimally.

Yeah me too. He ordered all brand new caps for it today . Figured the filter caps maybe good but after 42 years , how much longer till they die

It's always great to have someone local that can repair an amp properly. I have a buddy that builds and repairs amps, he handles pretty much all the amp work I've needed. In the case of my Mark IV-A though, I sent it to Boogie to have the repairs done. I was floored with the result and reasonable price. They went through it top to bottom, replaced a page and a half long list of components that were out of spec.....then they even fixed the loose wood side rail (chassis support) and replaced all the mounting screws and washers with new, at no charge. I was very impressed with their service and approach to maintaining their customers older amps. Just my experience, I thought I would share. I feel like the companies that have "made it" and still have great customer service, deserve some credit!

I was going to joke that one of your filter caps had exploded on the floor lol.......I see the walkway salt behind your amp, added it up

As the owner of a Super Champ I agree 100%. I hear people rave about the dirty channel of the SC for some reason, but it's not like a Boogie at all. It's actually a modification of the near-universally loathed Fender "Pull Boost" stealing gain from the reverb circuit.

The clean, with a good speaker, really does shine.

Also, like Muckman, I've had great experience with Mesa Boogie's service department. They go way out of their way to make sure you're happy and will bend over backwards to service their amps to optimal performance. I was very impressed when they diagnosed an issue with one of the Dual Calibers (DC-5) I've owned that used to cut out suddenly. They fixed it for free and only made me pay shipping.

BTW -- How does it sound now?

It’s not quite done , I misread his message lol and this is what he had to say.

“Out with the old and in with the new.
Back to factory fresh and stock wiring with a couple of mods that I have added to make the lead drive / master controls more user friendy.
I like perfection so...Chasing down a hum/ ground issue introduced by the geaphic eq.
Looks like a design flaw..hopefully we can make it quiet and useable.
We? Just spent an enjoyable half hour brainstorming with.......
The Boogieman”

The boogieman is warranty guy in Ontario he used to work for.

So I guess two weeks till my pay starts rolling again .

Bummer, dude. Sorry to hear it. At least it's in good hands until then, and it will make your reunion with it sweeter!

Good luck with the job situtation :C(
