Guys

I know I've only posted a couple of times but I am an avid Guild guitarist. I wouldn't do this unless I though it necessary as it's become personal.

Several weeks ago a very nice fellow contacted me about purchasing a Guild D25 from ebay. He asked my honest opinion of Guild's over Martin and several other guitars. After giving my thoughts on guitars and the Guild's $$ at the time, I suggested another D25 on ebay. A 1974 Cherry, Serial#107895. The seller claimed it had "lacquer cracks" along with some normal wear and tear and dents and dings. It sold for $500.00.

My new acquaintance bought the Guild #107895. When he received it, it was not lacquer cracks. It was wood cracks through the top. My friend contacted the seller and both parties agreed to return the guitar in exchange for a refund.

The seller has reneged on the deal. My friend sent the guitar back and has yet to get his money.

The seller now has the same Guild on Craigslist....

This guy owes my friend $500.00 bucks. And now he's trying to pawn this Guild off again as something it isn't. And if I"m not mistaken, those are the same photos the seller had on ebay.

Sorry to vent but thought anyone looking for a D25 should be wary especially of this one.

Thanks.

If your friend used Paypal he needs to do a chargeback & initiate a dispute with Paypal/Ebay.

It's even better if he used a charge card with Paypal...

Hope he kept all his emails/correspondence.

.... as a matter of fact here's a recent post on this board about the very same Guild...

It goes without saying, but that SUCKS! I hope your friend finds a way to take action against this person.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: We all make the world what we want it to be, and we live in the world we help make. Not exactly karma, but hopefully something will come back to bite this seller in the arse.

On a side note:

Were you in Athens before? I think I remember seeing your user ID/location in an old random thread I came across. I did about five years in Athens before moving to NC. And I grew up in the next county east of there. Just curious.

Jane's advice is absolutely on target. Your friend needs to do two things. One, contact Paypal and start the dispute process to get a refund. Two, prove he returned the guitar. They will reverse the payment if he can document the steps he has taken.

Not to veer......again..........but............

I'm not familiar with Club 33. Guess that was before my time if you bought your '74 NEW at Blue Eagle! I was there from '98-'03, but I grew up in Marietta so there were occasional trips to Athens before and after living there.

Up until today my avatar pic on LTG was my Blue Eagle t-shirt. That's a cool shop. Knew some guys there and had them work on an old Washburn electric I used for punk.

Next will be a picture of my shirt from Tony's.

My band played the Union and Mama Einstein's (used to be the Dugout, I think). Underground below Artifacts on the corner across the street from Tony's and the BP.

Good times!

Anyway, PayPal may be able to help, but I learned from first-hand experience there's a limit to what they'll get involved in. If your friend sent money via PayPal and selected the purpose of the transfer of money as being for "goods," then he may have no recourse. PayPal will get involved in disputes if the money was sent for, say, an "Ebay item," and they selected that option when transferring the money. I'd have to know more details about the transaction to say for sure. But definitely contact PayPal if that's how they did the money to see if there is an option for resolving the matter.

Otherwise, I hope he kept good records of everything. It's a shame how often people are put in positions of inconvenience and are forced to expend time and energy fighting dishonest people. Life is so much simpler when things are handled properly and honestly.

I'm crossing my fingers for your friend.

Sorry that happened -theirs a bunch of them floating around ( keep looking) - bought my D-25CH last winter -their not all that pricey - mine had a few issues ( that the seller stated those clearly and honestly ) it had a fall when it was new ( back in 1979) had some nicks, scapes and a minor cosmetic stuff -its a wonderful guitar .I use it as my travel guitar . I honestly think its comparable to many 1500 dollar guitars on the market today . i got burned once on Fleabay- its a hit and miss -thou Paypal typically straightens stuff out -but their not speedy !

An update .....

My friend had already opened up an dispute ticket for the D25 transaction. According to the seller, the sellers PayPal account had been "locked out" because of the dispute and therefore could not make a refund. However, my friend received documentation from PayPal explaining he could clear the dispute once the seller refunded the amount. So it's fairly obvious the sellers account was not locked based on this disputed transaction and wished to, if nothing else, hang on to the money as long as possible.

My friend sent the seller the link to this thread. Apparently there is power in the people who know right from wrong. My friend miraculously received notice from PayPal today of forthcoming payments. :) Due within 7 days.

I hope this is resolved as promised.

Thanks guys for hanging out, offering advice and being there when someone needs help. I hope I can return the favor.

If the guitar was sent USPS a complaint can be made with the local Postmaster. Mail fraud is a federal offense and taken seriously in cases like this. Nasty that.

That is great news! Especially since there are so many times when it goes the other way.

and yet another update....

The seller has pulled his Craigslist sale of the broken 74 D25. He did the right thing.

If he wants to unload a broken guitar, then he should come clean and take his lumps on it. He would, no doubt, have a clear conscience, be rid of a broken guitar, have a few bucks in his pocket and the buyer would know what they are getting.

We'll keep a Blue Eagle eye :) out for this one in the future. It'll show up somewhere.

With the help of the Guild community my friend finally received his refund from this failed D25 sale. The seller became very aware of this post. Your thoughts and comments were persuasive enough to let this scallywag know he couldn't get away with lying and deceitful selling.

My friend is obviously bummed out. He was really fired up for the Guild. He's put his guitar purchase on hold for now. It's a shame a crank seller ruined a dream for a fellow guitarist.

Chap, that's good to hear and a good result for your friend.

D-25's come and go on Ebay all the time ...... hope your friend hasn't "lost faith" ...... the D-25 is a huge favourite around here. The D-4 is basically the same guitar, I understand ...... less bling and often in HR ( hand-rubbed ) finish, as an alternative to high gloss finish.
