Very strange. The original link was to the first ebay listing which was an auction style listing. But now I see the fmhouse bass pickup ring when I follow that link as well. And yes, looking over the stuff he has listed & his asking prices makes me think I'm in the wrong business...... Just edited the original link to the current listing.

Yes, the original headstock veneer is gone. I do have some 100yr old spruce chunks that I scored from a local violin maker years ago that might be similar enough grain for the extra controls hole. If I keep it I would probably do a burst to match my Aristocrat, so that spot wouldn't necessarily be an obvious patch.

Hello

No hard feelings then? I´m ok with this monkey business.

The lack of neck issues makes me so tempted. I figure it would cost around $1,000 to fix up, but I couldn’t say for sure without asking my luthier. I’d return it to stock as much as possible myself. The only thing that truly stops me is that most of you think it should be Alembicized (possibly a made up word).

As a Moderator, I hate to veer on a listing by the Site Owner but...

Probably the original "Alembecized M85" for some definition of "Alembecized".

Hello

I must clarify - on the eBay-listings are 446 items ( just to make sure - dklsplace in LTG = fmhouse in eBay as per post #1 ) - the prices for the guitars are fine and reasonable - I was in my earlier post referring to items like a Fender neck plate for 549 USD - usually when someone has hundreds of items I list them highest price first and go down - that´ why I commented first.

Naturally I understand, that there are folks out there, who have tons of money to burn and who think their guitar will sound different if the neckplate is older or if they buy used pots for 695 USD instead of new and smooth for 50 USD.

Over here we often say " The one asking high price is not crazy - he who pays it is". Also eBay dealer policy allows for such pricing with fixed monthly fee instead of provision. I have an acquaintance in Switzerland who sells old ReVox hifi stuff at outrageous prices - or he tries to - he is selling a lot low priced stuff - and those extra-high-price items keep circulating year after year.

So finally - my intention was NOT to insult dklsplace - apologies if there was personal misunderstanding.
Ah. Yeah, this recently new eBay functionality is very confusing. When I checked Don's items for sale, there was the M-85 II and a Guild pin. I can see how you got ebay-bamboozled. It's happened to me too. :C(

Now back to that dang bass. Someone please buy it and rescue it!

Part of me wants to rescue this bass, because I think buying it up and fixing it up would still be cheaper than a semi hollow M-85 (when those do come up for sale). I'm currently trying to tell myself that because I have a Starfire, there is no need for a semi hollow M-85. At the same time, I'm pretty sure I know someone who has a few parts from around that era of Guild, and would probably let me buy them for a decent price...

Getting ready to pull the plug on the listing. Family stuff happening this weekend so I'll pull it down on Monday if there's no other interest.

After the discussion in this thread, my interest in doing the project myself has grown again so I started looking at parts I don't already have. Thinking this might be an acceptable option for the headstock veneer.

Not a political comment just an observation that there are more chances for a less than successful transaction when international borders are crossed :)

Yeah, but having had to deal ebay's buyer protection policies when I did the music store thing, the risk isn't what it once was. That & his feedback profile is, at least, respectable.

Check with Hans. He has various headstock veneers.

I bought a similar (possibly the same) veneer, from the same seller for a project I have my Luthier working on for me. It worked out quite well.

Here's another one/two listed on Ebay now, not sure about these though:

I bought a NOS Westerly veneer from this seller to stash away for a future project, but I haven't used it yet.

I bought this. I feel a little guilty, but $895 seemed like a great price.
