Hi all, looking to buy an early 70’s D-55 (68 or 69 even better:)

Honest playwear is welcomed but no cracks, major repairs or modifications. Good neck angle and saddle. One more silly thing, no strap button in the heal. Strange I know, but it’s a pet peeve of mine. We all have one:)

Thanks in advance!!

First year of D55, IIRC,1974. It was available a few years earlier as a special order called TV Special. So, again IIRC, '71 or '72 was first year as SO.

Just verified that in Hans's book. I imagine that examples earlier than 1974 are going to be hard to come by.

It was a special order from ‘68-74, and it was always designated as a D55, if I recall correctly, so I believe ‘68 is the first year.

If sound is your top priority, I would give a New Hartford built D55 a serious look. And the Westerly 1999 and 2000 D55s can hold their own. Never played a bad one!

Does anyone have any experience with 70’s D-55’s? I was hoping to find a local guitar so I can try before I buy but no luck so far. Anything to look out for besides the usual things when buying vintage? What’s the general consensus on them tone wise?
I had a mid-'70s for a year or two, it was a good guitar, but I like my '94 better. Can't go wrong with either era. I second the New Hartford recommendation, my three NH guitars are superb, and I can't imaging a D55 would be any less.

I have a '77 that a like a lot. It has slightly tapered X-bracing. The newer ones have scalloped X-bracing and the changes the voice a bit.

The scalloped bracing probably adds a bit more bass I’m guessing
Yes, and that's one reason I wanted an older one. I have a couple of Martin dreadnaughts so I have all the bass I need. :)
