I'd been curious about the Brian May Guilds, but the prices tend to be in the untouchable range for me.

This one, the Poor Man's version, wound up being an e-Bay exception, so I grabbed it.

It looked like a bargain, even though I was the only bidder in a 10-day auction. On Dec. 12, an identical BM Standard (in black) went for $1,785 with four bidders over $1,300.

Does anyone on LTG own one of these? Comments from the guys working at Westerly at the time?

Depending on the routing under the pickguard, it seems to me that someone could make an alternative pickguard, replacing the 5-way switch with the six switches for pickup on/off and phase on/off and relocating the volume and tone controls. Then rewire the pickups. That would be an interesting experiment, reversible and not very invasive. And it would replicate (?) the electronic features that are characteristic of the Brian May design.

No tremolo. Interesting combo stop tailpiece and bridge -where did that come from?

I'm bummed this model lacks the zero-fret feature, as that is one of the features of the Brian May guitars that intrigues me. But the price was right, and I should get it next week.

I can't seem to keep my hands off this stuff as the Tour de Guild continues into 2009.

Hey 'zilla,

Congratulations on the BM03

I actually prefer these versions to the Signature Model. I mean how can you possibly go onstage with an 01? Nevermind it's contrived layout. While the 03 reminds me of a Tele or an LP Jr...just a good, straightforward, rock n' roll workhorse.

I had the good fortune of helping to tweak the design of these later models.... under the direction of an amp manufacturing guru who was also owned by Faas and Co.

Hello zilla,

Apart from the overall shape and the 3 pickups, the Brian May Standard doesn't have that much in common with the original Brian May Signature design. However, it is a very good guitar in it's own right and it would be a great guitar to experiment with.
I have one and I like it a lot. Just like hideglue said: good, straightforward, rock n' roll workhorse.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks for the information and comments, guys. Cool to hear that Hide played a role in developing the model. Who is the amp guru Hide references?

It's quite different from most of the electrics that I've been catching and releasing. I've a general bias toward humbuckers, I guess. It's been a couple years since I had a guitar around here with three single coils.

Hans, Hide - what were the original knobs used on these guitars? Neither of the two I posted look like they have the correct knobs.

And are the "official" Guild dating records correct in terms of only 57 of these made?

Hello zilla,

That would be Mark S. but I never checked this with him personally; I mean, I never asked him what exactly his input was.

The knobs on the guitar you bought are the correct ones. They are copies of the knobs that Gibson used on it's late '50s Les Paul Special.

Yes, those numbers are correct.

Sincerely,
