I've had to think long and hard about this one, because I've had this wonderful guitar for 23 years. But I'm downsizing and moving towards smaller guitars with big fat necks due to arthritis in my hands. I just don't play this one as well as I used to, and it is too nice to be sitting in its case all the time.

These D-46s are pretty scarce, only built for five years in the early '80s. This one is in very good condition and sounds incredible. I doubt you'll find a nicer one. I'm just the second owner.

Silky sitka spruce top, swamp ash b/s and neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge. Top-notch woods all around.

CONDITION: I just had the nut and saddle replaced with bone. Had the frets crowned and polished at the same time, they look like new. Action is good. Some divots in the ebony fretboard, good honest wear, and they do not affect playability. One classic case bite on the top. Some wear through the finish at the bottom of the sound hole. The gloss finish is worn through on the top where my arm comes over the top, hard to spot though. Various small scratches and impressions on the front and back, but nothing glaring; just playwear to be expected on a 42-year old instrument. Some of the gloss on the back of the neck is worn through around frets 2-4.

The original Guild case is included. It has some scuffs and dings, but the handle and all the latches and hinges are intact. K&K Pure pickup too, sounds great.

TONE: "Sublime" is not too strong of a word. Balanced. This is a powerful guitar, but it can whisper as well. It gets noticed at my local open mic, the sound guy loves it. It sounds very much like a good D-50; I once had one of those, but moved it along because it sounded just like this one, and I liked this one better. Very resonant, you can feel it hum against your chest and left hand when you play it.

Great strummer and flatpicker, but a surprisingly excellent fingerpicker as well, as good as anything I've ever played.

SPECS: The nut measures 1 11/16". I would call the neck about "medium," neither slender nor chunky. The string spacing at the bridge is 2 1/8".

PRICE: $1500 plus $100 shipping. Shipping will probably be more than that because I live out-of-the-way, but I'll pick up the difference.

TRADES: I would consider a trade for a smaller guitar with a big fat neck and a 1 3/4" (or larger) nut. A 00-18V, or something like that. I can add cash.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for looking!

Here's a couple more photos. No cracks and the center seam is tight.

I measure (with a steel ruler) the low E at just a tiny bit over 3/32" at the 12th fret, and the high E at just a tiny bit over 2/32". I mostly flatpick these days, and I like where it's at.

There is a short scratch on the headstock that you can see in the photo, to the left of the "G."

Thanks, it was my lucky day back in 2000 when I walked into a guitar shop to buy some strings and there it was!

The original owner had traded it in for a Martin. The manager of the shop said that this Guild was "way better than the Martin he bought."

Here it is at our excellent Open Mic.

People in the audience could be heard to ask, "Who is that HACK up there playing that gorgeous Guild guitar?

What!? I never thought I'd see the day. It had to be a tough call. I know since I've been in any online forum, here or the other one, no one raved about the D46 as much as you. And with good reason.

The manager of the shop said that this Guild was "way better than the Martin he bought."
I have no doubt! Not even sure which model Martin matters :) In fact I moved along a Tacoma D55 in favor of mine. The first time I laid hands on it, the ash b&s drew me in, and the tone was definitely special. Lucky I was able to pester the owner enough til he relented. Its been my favorite since.

Golly, I may have to be the next ambassador of this model then. I agree with all the attributes you heap on it, and you don't have the rosewood strip in back!. This is one of their best models ever, someone should buy it and experience it for themselves.

Good luck with the sale! And , I suspect it shouldn't last long at that price, especially with the recent work. The lucky buyer will have a great guitar for the next 42 years.

Let us know which smaller guitar(s) you wind up with. :)

Thanks, Boneman. It is a bummer about my worn out old hands. I was playing my Collings earlier, which has a substantial neck, and even it was giving me a hard time today.

I've been looking at Eastmans lately. I know their parlors have big fat necks that I really like. And I don't want to spend a ton.
