The strap peg at the harp is a tapered plastic piece.

I just realized the fact - now I'm thinking I'll never trust it again.

Thoughts on plugging the body and using a screw on style? If so, what is recommended? The bindings have already been replaced so the guitar is no longer a virgin.

Thx,

Jim

Why would you never trust it? Pretty standard for an archtop of this vintage (or an acoustic, for that matter.)

Thanks for that...

I guess I'm looking for a little positive reinforcement?

As long as it's not loose and the taper fits tightly, it should be good to go.

Walter,

What have you got on your "D"?

I see these videos with the guys losing their straps and I get nervous. But, then, I guess I should just avoid straps...

I have tapered pins in a couple Guilds and a 1952 Gibson L-4 and I don't trust them either. Especially the L-4 as it has come out a few times. A guitar tech told me to put a wrap of masking tape on the pin and so far it has worked. Still don't totally trust it though.
Thanks John

How hard would it be to cut a plate of sheet metal to match the outline of the tailpiece's hinge plate and tap a threaded hole where the strap button goes? You could mount it with the existing tailpiece screw holes (either under or over the tailpiece) and screw a strap button in with a machine screw. If you wanted to be really fancy/secure about it, you could tack weld a nut to the underside for some extra thread length and probably still clear the factory hole if it was well-aligned.

Thanks for the input, kakerlak.

That's the kind of thing I was looking for, good ideas.

Heck, or maybe you just a strap button, machine screw, couple of washers and a nylon-insert locknut. Put a washer on either side of the (larger) hole in the tailpiece to keep the strap button/nut from pulling through, then tighten it up. The assembly might tend to wander around a little, but the strap button would never come off.
