howdy, can someone tell me about this model from this era? specs, etc...i might have a handle on one, larry
Hello rogersguy,
Have a couple of minutes to come in while checking my mail.
Haven't seen the guitar so I do not know what we're talking about.
If you say it's a 1955 X-400 it will probably not conform to the early X-400 specifications, because by 1955 Guild had already established it's model designations and the line did not include the X-400 any longer.
All the X-400s (and X-440s for that matter) that have later than 1954 serial numbers were put together with older X-400 superstructures but with the hardware from later models. Consequently most of the later X-400s are not identical.

i saw that in Hans book also, but cant find much else. maybe someone here has had one? is the only difference between this and an x175 a spruce top? thanks, larry
The X-400 was similar to the later X-175 but with different materials and hardware. They both had a laminated spruce top though!
I believe John Kidder had one of these 'later' X-400/440s but if I remember correctly, his guitar had a few parts changed on it.
Try to post a photo if you can! Do you have a serial number?
Sincerely,
Hans Moust
