1954 GUILD GUITAR & AMP CATALOG + 1950's FENDER Catalogs

According to Hans Moust iconic treatise The Guild Guitar Book, the first Guild catalog was published in 1954. This then is a very rare Targ & Dinner counter-catalog from 1954 which includes that FIRST Guild guitar and amplifier catalog!

I have a HUGE assortment of old catalogs acquired over 40 years which I am just now beginning to sell but I have never seen the 1954 Guild catalog so I know it's rare. I DO have other Guild catalogs including one from 1955-56 but not the 1954 Guild catalog although I had been asked about it frequently. Then, recently, as I was pouring through the 1954 Targ & Dinner catalog at the request of a customer...there it was: the 1954 Guild catalog in all its resplendent glory! It was sandwiched in between numerous guitars and amplifiers from classic companies like Danelectro, Supro, Harmony and Kay to name a few. The HUGE 340 page T & G catalog itself is in very good condition with all pages firmly attached to the spine. No stains or writing inside. No issues.

Under the circumstances, due to the rarity of the 1954 Guild catalog and it's likely interest for Forum members, I'm listing this first here so that the good folks on this Forum can have the early bird opportunity to pick it up. I've been selling other T & G catalogs for $200-$250 depending on the year. This one goes for $275 plus shipping.

Also have 1950's & 1960's Fender catalogs in new old stock condition...absolutely original but guaranteed to be 65-60 years old and in excellent uncirculated condition. See pics on page 2.

Maybe we should take up a collection, get it for GAD (and ask him to scan, index and post) and then give it to Hans?

I'm a little surprised that no one here is interested in the very FIRST catalog that Guild issued given how few of these could possibly still exist? That said, if this isn't the right place for something like this, I will understand and will list it where there is likely to be a wider audience...after one last summertime blues bump! :)

Hello

I have here about 30 shelve meters = 100 shelve feet of books. Plus some that are laying horizontally on top of others.

Let´s make a deal - you send me that book - when it comes - I´ll send you ten pounds books. And you can pick. I have all kinds - even in english. Some related to music.

If you agree - I hereby promise to scan at least all Guild content ( 7 pages ??? ) and share it with all LTG members for FREE - plus I will scan more later if anybody has interest.

If you agree - it makes you to be The Good Guy who helped LTG-members get more info and pics etc - if not . . .

If you are interested - tell me what kind of books you´re looking for.

Cheers

Thanks Nuuska for your considerate overture. To be candid, I have about 200 old music instrument catalogs (Fender, Gibson, Guild, Gretsch, Oahu, Martin, National, etc) and large musical instrument distributor catalogs which I acquired 30 years ago from a closed music shop owned by my neighbor who had a shop from 1950 through 1980. When he passed away, I acquired his inventory which I left in storage until my retirement several years ago. Last year I began to slowly sell these catalogs to collectors, historians and musical instrument enthusiasts. I have no interest in acquiring any more and hope to be completely sold out by this time next year as we are downsizing our home! I've included just a FEW pictures of the distributor catalog inventory. These are all LARGE catalogs, some with as many as 300+ pages, loaded with pictures of every conceivable musical instrument and accessory! A veritable treasure trove of historical information for musical instrument enthusiasts. Feel free to PM me if interested in any specific catalogs. Thanks again.

Quite frankly sir I suspect the issue is that the investment is a little (even a LOT) heavier than most of us care to make in literature, when we struggle enough with just the instrument budget.
You were a gentleman to offer us the first look and nobody's faulted the asking price, so I think your second comment is correct: it's just not the actual best market here for that material here, surprising as it might seem.

I appreciate the candor Adorshki and I'm about to close the thread under those circumstances. That said, I'm willing to take a discounted $225 plus shipping. If that doesn't float anyone's boat, then I'll have learnt my lesson. Thanks again for weighing in so kindly.

It's also the height of summer vacation. It's harder to sell anything in August.

Interestingly, I received an email from Hans who told me that sometime after the publication of his book in 1995 wherein he stated that the 1954 Guild catalog was "the earliest known catalog", he acquired a 1953 Guild catalog which is in his collection. He didn't mention what the differences were between the two catalogs but that update gave me this opportunity to correct my stated assumption that the 1954 Guild catalog was the first Guild catalog! Nevertheless, since Hans may have the only known copy of that 1953 catalog, this 1954 catalog should still be of significant interest to Guild enthusiasts and historians? I've had success selling these old catalogs elsewhere but assumed that folks here might appreciate the first shot? If not, I'll ply it elsewhere.

Thanks for those emails inquiring whether I have any more or other Guild catalogs. I do have a few remaining so I post some pics here. Email me for details if interested? Thanks.

It's been 6 weeks since I posted this last so it's time for a bump just in case some folks didn't catch this post the first couple of times.

PM me if you're looking for any old Guild catalogs...or Gretsch...or Gibson...or Fender (I've got about 100 original, never distributed, "pre-CBS" Fender catalogs...check out the pics!). I've got a filing cabinet full of original vintage guitar catalogs all from the 1950's, 1960's & 1970's!
