Hello all,
I am certain to have regrets here, but I have decided to try selling my x-550. This is a 1953 version, with a 1 3/4 nut and the longer scale -- it's a very lovely guitar and very early example. It is of course quite well used, and has been refretted, sometime before I purchased it. I had a faber bridge installed when I bought it and also had it set up for 11s, both by the luthier who used to work out of the jazz school in downtown Berkeley.

The bigsby may well be an old one. The tuners are single line klusons and I"ve been told they are original, which means they are probably the most valuable bit of kit on the instrument :- )

You can see images and my further description here. I very much prefer a local sale in the Bay Area but understand that those who will really want this might be farther afield. This is a really old and lovely guitar, it is more honey or brownish than blonde now, and has the usual binding repairs and oddities, but everything seems stable now.
Needless to say I am happy to answer questions, etc
I hope I'm not making a mistake!
[EDIT: See Hans' comment below, I was mistaken about the tuners, they are not 'single line' but the earlier 'no line' kluson, and are original]

I was confused about this for a while, but Hans clarified when I posted some photos in another part of the forum last year. It's serial # 1145, in the first 150.

What a classic model! You mentioned that the tuners are "single line Klusons and probably most valuable" but none of the posted pics feature these tuners so can you post (here or on the Reverb site) a picture of them taken, of course, from the back of the headstock so I can see exactly what they look like? Given how early this model is the tuners on it would also certainly be of great interest to the enthusiasts here on the Forum. Thanks and good luck with the sale.

Hello DannyF,

You're mixing up the various Kluson tuner names. What you have on your Guild X-550 are 'single ring' Keystone tuners. 'Single line' Klusons have the Kluson Deluxe marking in the middle of the gear cover, as opposed to 'Double line' Klusons, which have the Kluson Deluxe marking on both sides of the gear cover. The ones that have no marking on the back, just as on your guitar, are usually referred to as 'no line' Klusons and yes, they are original on your Guild X-550.

The 'single line / single ring' Kluson Deluxe tuners are the valuable ones, since those were used on the late '50s Gibson Les Paul Standard.

Here's a photo that shows one of those tuners:

Thanks Hans, I assumed 'value' to be a relative term anyway :) And I appreciate the confirmation of originality!

Hans...since I've only seen these 'no-line' tuners on early Guild 500's, 350's and F-50's with oval pearloid buttons, can you indicate whether the keystone buttons seen in the OP's posted picture are indeed original to this model and time period? Thanks.

Yes, they are original! If you have a copy of 'The Guild Guitar Book', I've mentioned it in the first paragraph of the 'Tuning Machines' chapter on page 40.

Unfortunately my potential buyer changed his mind, so this is still for sale. I've knocked a bunch off the price, maybe that will matter if anyone was on the fence. Thanks!

After six weeks of trying to sell this the financial imperative on my side has abated. And even at the lower price no real buyer emerged, in spite of some serious interest. So, I've strung it with flat wound 12s, tweaked the truss rod, and intend to hold onto it and restore a bit. It is no longer for sale.
I will post a query in another part of the forum about who I might reach out to for restoration work, in the meantime, it's still getting played :)
Thanks much for questions and interest!IMG_3098.jpg
