Hi everyone,
I'm posting this again, after a first go (and some cold feet) earlier this year.
Pics here: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/d/berkeley-1953-guild-550-gorgeous/7701657621.html

Hello,
I am certain to have regrets here, and have had cold feet before, but now must sell my Guild x-550. This is a 1953 version, with a 1 3/4 nut, the longer 25.5” scale, and 2 Franz pickups -- it's a very lovely guitar and very early example.

It is of course quite well used, and has been refretted, sometime before I purchased it. I had a faber bridge installed at the time I bought it and also had it set up, both tasks completed by the luthier who used to work out of the jazz conservatory in downtown Berkeley. It also has a bigsby, which might well be nearly as old as the guitar - but I really don't know. The original bridge is in the case.

I looked for one of these for about the decade prior and so was thrilled to find this. I expect someone will know what this is and be as excited about it as I have been.

Original case, also quite well used :) This is an old guitar, there is no doubt about it, it has nicks and scratches and the finish is well aged to a beautiful brown from its original blonde. 100% beautiful patina. What else can I say, the Franz pickups are single coil and low output and just very sweet. It's a gorgeous, exceedingly rare old arch top from Guild's first year of production.

I’ve tried to take detailed pictures to give a sense of its patina and equipment. This has its original no-line kluson tuners, and is the 145th Guild guitar ever built (or ever built with a serial #).

asking $4200 +shipping and any PayPal fees

It currently has 12 flat-wound chromes on it, and low, even action across the fretboard. It’s a superb, if well worn rare instrument.
thanks!

Nice, first year of Guild coincides with my first year of grade school, it would be the closest I could come to a birth year Guild. I'd have to sell my Artist Award to afford it, unfortunately.

A1953, wow! I wonder what # guitar made it was in that first year. One of the 3 amigos had to have worked on this one yes?

Hello again all, just following up to say that I can of course move my asking down a bit for LTGers on the fence or seriously considering.

I do want this to find a new home, and figuring out how to price something like this is not so straightforward, particularly as I am loathe to give it up :) But knowing it will be cared for matters too.

Happy to talk about the guitar, answer questions, etc.

Just a quick question, I'm not that familiar with bigsbys, does the tailpiece effect the top of the guitar in anyway? Does it require any modification to the guitar? I'm a jazz player so never found use for a vibrato so I'd probably take it off if I had a guitar with one.

I've never heard of a Bigsby hurting a guitar top. If they did, they wouldn't be so popular.

Hey, Danny — like — wow.

Danny can speak for his guitar, but in general, a Bigsby B-6 like this simply rests on the top, and it can be easily removed. In my experience with a bunch of '50s Guild and Gibson archtops, a Bigsby adds a little sustain compared to a trapeze (likely due to mass and dampening of the top). It's less pronounced than the differences between different bridge types (TOM, wood, brass, etc.).

Beautiful guitar! If I didn't have a close relative, I'd be curious.

On the '53 Guild X-375 I had, the Bigsby that a previous owner had installed was attached only by the strap peg and rested on the top.

Hi there, a good question and the answer is that the bigsby does not damage or require any alteration of the top. It is affixed at the bottom, where the rear strap peg is, and then hinges over and just rests on the top. I love having it there, tbh, even though I'm not using it so much.

Great, thanks everyone for the answers everyone. I usually turn away when I see bigsbys on old guitars, not cause I don't think they're cool or useful, just cause I don't typically use them.
