In looking into buying an older Guild 12, I've notice that a good number of them come with cracks in the top near the fretboard. And through my research, I've seen it mentioned that these occur because of failure to p[properly keep adjusted the double truss rods, either from improper adjustment in the first place or movement over time due to changes in the wood.

So my question is, are the presence of these particular types of cracks, when repaired properly, a serous detriment to the playability and sound of the instrument?

I have had the same crack in my '82 D-50, which I bought new (a factory second, probably due to the crack and other issues), and Carlo Greco had fixed it prior to my acquiring it. It did not affect the tone of this guitar, most likely because there is not a lot of vibration in that area.
I also have the same crack in the same place in my '70 F-212, and the same thing: has been repaired by putting what they call a "diamond" stud under the top. This "diamond" is a flat piece of rosewood, or similar, about the size of a dime, and it is glued to the underside, across the crack. This seals the crack and keeps it from spreading.

The short answer is, no, it does not affect the sound at all . . . :)

I've seen several of those type cracks which appear to have been there for years and are virtually stable. I had one in a D55 and have one in my D25. I know the one in the D25 has been there for 20 years or so, it's never grown or opened up. I only owned the D55 for a short time, having bought it new, the crack was already there, but it didn't grow while I had it, and I sold that guitar to a friend and see her occasionally, still the same. I wouldn't think they would effect the sound at all.
