Oh, I'm with you 100%. I find it weird that people balk at being into a guitar (money-wise) for more than it is worth. Are they are saying that the guitar is only worth it if it is free? I don't think I'd have three 1970s Guilds (with another on the way) if I was told they were worth zero, but I...

Hoboken vs. Westerly…is the bridge the “tell”?

This is a '67, so clearly a Hoboken, right? Are these "cat ear" points?

Hoboken vs. Westerly…is the bridge the “tell”?

From time to time a question about whether a 1968-69 D35, D40, D50 etc was made in Hoboken or Westerly comes up. It seems that every time (unless the bridge has been replaced) the guitar is definitively from Hoboken, it has the old-style wider “floating” saddle while the Westerly saddles sit in...

The straightedge measure works if the bridge is at least 0.3125” tall. I had someone send me a pic of a guitar passing the straightedge test, but the bridge was shaved down to 0.23” tall. It actually sounds great, but a reset and new bridge would be ideal. With a fresh $500-$900 reset, it’s...

I don't trust anyone who says "the action is good." I have had sellers tell me that and then I get a measure from them and the low E is anywhere from 9/64" to 12/64" over the 12th fret. With the saddle as it looks to be, if the action is > 6/64", then it is not "good." But, a reset is not the...

    Long-scale F20 info?

But widths all 1-5/8”, I’m surprised by that.

    Pickguard variation, especially early on.

I agree! Is this an Oxnard maple F-55? And is it yours? So envious if it is!

Have “we” located the Nick Drake guitar?

By "we", I meant the collective wisdom of the Internet. By adding the quote marks, I was indicating that "we" should not be taken literally (as is the modern understanding of quotes used that way). I also should have put "the Nick Drake guitar" in quotes as well, as "we" have also pretty much...

    Pickguard variation, especially early on.

I thought maybe the pickguards got smaller later, but here is a ‘66 D-40. And I know I’ve seen a ‘67 D-40 with a huge one.

    Pickguard variation, especially early on.

Did Guild have a standard pickguard template (or several of them?). I know these pics are from different years, but they seem to bounce around from long to short and fatter to skinnier. These are all F-47s. It just seems weird to me that they vary so much. It cannot be differential shrinkage...

When is a neck reset no longer possible?

Haha, it does feedback more than others. I’m leaving if for now. My original question was about a ‘66 f-47 that has had at least one reset and might need another soon. At least the bridge on that one is 3/8” thick at its height.

When is a neck reset no longer possible?

For sure, but by D-25's is 0.22" tall. I have never heard of a factory installing one well below 1/4". It is also slightly concave under the D and G strings, they are almost always convex!

When is a neck reset no longer possible?

I wouldn’t ever sand a bridge. My D-25 with the shaved bridge is VERY resonant, but to the point the K&K mini output seems kinda muddy. It’s like there are too many vibrations bouncing around. I love it unplugged, but not as much plugged in.

When is a neck reset no longer possible?

I have a '70 D-25 with good action (5.5/64"), but the bridge has been shaved and the strings are only about 3/8" off the top at the bridge. My luthier says he'd prefer not to perform a reset as there is not much of the heel left to shave off and fix the angle. I am just hoping the guitar is...

Have “we” located the Nick Drake guitar?

I think Nick Laird-Clowes says he bought the guitar before writing the song, and that album came out in 1986. I guess it is possible that Nick Drake tuned the guitar during the photo shoot and the photographer put it in a closet for decade. But yeah, pretty unlikely,

    Case for a 1960s-1972 F-47?

I called and asked. What I got was "the bottom of the guitar is not as rounded as a dread and the waist is not at the same place.

    Case for a 1960s-1972 F-47?

Good question. I was thinking the shape of the lower bout isn’t round enough. Those ‘60’s F-47s are not as round as the later F-40 shape.

    Case for a 1960s-1972 F-47?

The tech at the store tried a dreadnought case and it didn’t fit. I doubt a GF case would work, and those prob aren’t any easier to find! Maybe a jumbo case with some towels?

    Case for a 1960s-1972 F-47?

I’m looking at an old F-47 that does not have a case. Anyone know of one that would fit it?

Have “we” located the Nick Drake guitar?

Here is another article (seems a lot like the other one though). Still, that the founder of Dream Academy has it seems plausible. And yes, it drives me crazy that every M20 ever sold calls it “the Nick Drake guitar.”...
