So I got my Trussrod cover from Thalia and it is nice but just way too red for my guitar.
It is as red as my raw bridge block material I have on my bench. My headstock has faded to a medium brown
along with the fretboard ...so

I have a piece of Granadillo that when stained to Dark Walnut with 1 coat looks almost perfect match to my headstock.
I screwed it to another piece of wood so I can cut safety on the table saw.

The area that is stained on the Granadillo is 1 coat of Dark walnut. I nice subtle complement to the headstock and fretboard rosewood.
Here are some pics

Roll edges, drilled holes and applied stain.

Here's what my original TR cover looks like on the guitar with faded headstock and fretboard.

Peeling the potatoes in a few minutes.

Certainly nut for everyone but I was going after a subtle mod to enhance the guitar and get rid of the black which looked better when the guitar fretboard and headstock were newer and darker. They faded so much I thought this would be a nice touch but respective of Guild.
Hec, I like it.

Once the stain cures, I'll probably hit it with a coat of satin lacquer.

Great job - as I'm again late for the party - I ask - did you consider drilling the holes before cutting the outline? i can see you cut first - but the risk of splitting a thin piece would be lesser if holes were drilled first.

It all started with trying to just get the shape right. My first attempt actually worked out well.
The Granadillo is very hard and stiff and with sharp bits it drills super clean.

That' a very nice job, but other than the color was there a problem with the Thalia TRC? Was it too dark besides being red?
Red can be turned a more brownish color with a green toner stain...not to say I wouldn't have spent almost as much time changing its color as you did making a new one!

pretty...subtle and classy.

I have a cheap plastic TRC on my Madeira, might be a fun project!

The Thalia is a laminate cover and was typical redish rosewood. A thin layer of rosewood on top.
Which is described correctly on their website.

But after seeing the color on my headstock and the laminate - I really wanted something more subtle - a solid piece of Rosewood or something like that in a browner color.

Now that the stain is dry, I'm really feeling good about the effort put in and the results.
