Hey folks. I'm a relative Guild virgin here, and I'm very likely going to trade my 2008 Cole Clark FL2 for a 1978 Guild D25m tomorrow. Is there anything I should know about the instrument, or anything I should ask before I go through with the deal. (Questions, issues, dealbreakers, concerns, etc)

Welcome. Stick around - nice folks around here. Much love for the D-25 in all its flavors.

Check the neck angle - that will tell you if there is neck reset in the guitar's immediate future. That can be expensive.

Here's Frank Ford's article on frets.com:

Good luck in the hunt.

Looks to me like the Cole Cark is worth more than the D25, but if course only if some one wants to pay that much.

Can you play the Guild?

Yes I'll be able to play it before anything changes hands, and I made that clear to the other party as well.

Looks like the FL2 might be worth almost double the d25

Update: So I went through with it, and I love the guitar. Got some issues that I want to have looked at by a luthier when I have the cash, but it plays really well and sounds AMAZING and L O U D. Previous owner Tony Riced the soundhole, which I wish wasn't the case, but like I said it's a great guitar that I love playing.

Do it.

Never heard of this other brand, but Guild is world famous.

I had a '78 D25, one of the most amazing acoustic Dreads I've ever owned. I had to sell it because my other guitars didn't approve.

It really was that good.

With Martin Monels, just fabulous tone.

Depending on the model (your taste in guitars factored in) and the condition of the guitar, you probably can't go wrong with a Guild. For the money, you'll probably get a fantastic experience.

Personally, I'd say that enlarging a soundhole is a HEAVY MODIFICATION on a D25 so I hope the price reflected that!! There's too many nice D25s out there that are beautiful and unmolested! Glad you like the guitar, tho.

I do think I may seek out a cleaner example at some point though, or I may look into a D4 from 1992 just because I've always wanted a birth year guitar.

Tony Riced the sound hole? That's a great euphemism but I don't get it!
Photos please. Helps us think.
