There is one thing in this picture, that IN MY OPINION is wrong, or the picture is correct and something is odd. Not talking about them critters surrounding him.

Dunno... His legs and feet look odd to me. Leg angles look wrong, like they come out from the body one on top of the other, instead of next to, and the feet almost look like they are reversed (given that he has his legs crossed).

I see this, too. Looks like his left leg should be where his coat tail is.

The work was done five years after Dickens' death. It was based on "The Empty Chair" by Sir Samuel Luke Fildes, which was done of Dickens' desk and chair shortly after the author's unexpected death. In this work, "Dickens' Dream", the chair is positioned farther away from the desk. The figure of Dickens is based on a photograph by John Watkins.

Buss did not live to finish the work, which may be why some is in color and the remainder yet to be colored.

As far as what is wrong with the picture, I do not know.

This is getting very interesting - perhaps I shall wait - and see what all you good folks come up with. 😏

The wicker waste basket looks to be translucent. Clearly drawn after the desk, but you can still see the lines from the lower desk frame right through it.
There are other perspective lines, but the work is unfinished. I would guess they would be made less noticeable as it progressed.

With all those figures, it was quite the undertaking.
