it does look larger, and i really dig it!
i had a D35 that had an enlarged soundhole, not on purpose, as it was breaking away and i just stripped it out so i wouldnt look so damaged. it did not affect the structure or sound. while i could not tell a huge tonal difference, there was something different to the ear about the sound coming out of the larger hole. hard to put into words...but it was real.
Ever heard of a small-mouthed drill sergeant?

Westerly Wood:

Probably a small change to what is called the Heimholtz resonance frequency. That is the resonant frequency that the air rushing from inside the body to the outside and the frequency of the top resonate at. That is really the only thing that the soundhole changes. It is not a major factor in the sound of the top. but to somebody who has really good ears, or to somebody who is very familiar with the sound of a particular guitar, it can be audible.

See, THIS is why I love this forum. Where else would I have learned about the Heimholtz resonance frequency?

Big week coming up. Bridge and neck will be glued up, first strings on to check everything under tension. Then I’m assuming the refret and new nut and saddle will follow shortly, as well as fitting new bridge pins, end pin, and strap button. Getting close now.

Very exciting, and looking beautiful!

P.S. Your luthier only has one long pencil and two nubs. None of them have any eraser left. Maybe you should take him a pack of pencils and some erasers.

Oops! Two long pencils. Just saw the one on the workbench. Still looks like no eraser, though.

Is it because it is late here and I had few beers - or am I actually seeing right?

Top of the body looks like the neck is diving into it.

There @ 14th fret . . .

I’m really hoping that’s an optical illusion caused by the low resolution photo. Pretty sure it is.

love the enlarged soundhole.
I thought it seems to be only an optical illusion due to the large outer ring of the rosette.
Now this picture shows the new size, which seems to be exactly 10 cm in diameter.

I double checked with my New Hartford made F-20 and indeed my one only has a 9.2 cm soundhole, so it is 8mm enlarged.

Good to know my eyesight is not going as bad as the ears.

Apologies if @GuildyAsHell already reminded us, but that the top is for a D25, right? So technically maybe not "enlarged" as much as "re-spec'd", perhaps?

Only because "enlarged" implies making an existing soundhole larger, but in this case, it's due to the replacement top's original intended use. Guildy always said he was flexible about stuff like that, he wasn't going for a "correct restoration" anyway

So actually think it's kinda cool, fits in with theme. Hope the Helmholtz freq and Chladni patterns complement the body size. :sneaky:
