This old thing followed me home this morning; I couldn't resist the temptation for $375. Once I tuned it up to pitch the sound was/is incredible, as most of us have come to expect from these fine guitars. As you figure, it's not museum condition. Tons of checking, and a neck reset that looks to have been done by a blind armless man. But it seems to be stable now, and the body seems good and the neck is straight, so I figure I'll get all the fret/fretboard and neck issues sorted out with the reset, and then I'll have a sweet 12 that I'm not afraid to drag around with me.

That finish checking - didn't we decide to call them tone flames?

I agree, that checking on the top in the second picture is excellent. It really shows mojo! The Fender Custom Shop couldn't do it better for their new Closet Classic models!

Very nice find! If guitars could talk, I'd bet it would have an interesting story to tell. Year?

Looks like a hippie neck reset....:playful:

Where do you have your neck resets done?

Oh, I thought I said the year; my bad. It's a 1973 according to the Guild website.

I will probably do the neck reset myself; I like doing stuff like that for some reason. I just bought an old beater Fender 12 the other day for a trial run, and assuming everything goes to plan I'll go after this one after that. I certainly can't see myself making it any worse!

Which does remind me, this IS a California guitar. So it's not even just any mojo, it's genuine vintage California mojo! I'm not sure about tone flames, though. This one looks like it has more of them running across the grain, so I think it's the rarer optional ToneLightning™. :wink-new:

Wow, I wish I had that kind of skill and confidence.....I'm really good at taking things apart, but that's where it all ends.....:culpability:

I am most fortunate to sit next to and get to play, any time I want, a friend's F212XL every Friday night. My little group of musicians have a lot of great instruments and I've been around some 12 strings (a particular McPherson was a huge disappointment) but I am consistently blown away by the Guild. Personally I find that finish checking just adds character to any guitar. As for that neck reset..whew, it took a leap of courage I don't have to plunk down bucks given how rough that looks. But, it IS all about the tone after all is said and done. Congrats on your acquisition.

Sweet! I had a '73 212XL once. Huge tone. The headstock is super heavy, could be used as a ramming rod if you ever find yourself in dire circumstances. Congrats.

It was already worked on by a one-armed blind man, and looks to have been stored in the wood shed, and maybe even helped to cut some of that wood. I think Chaz will do just fine with the reset. If all else fails, however, I would ship it off to Kim at Guild and have it re-glorified.
