Okay, here's the question for consideration: I want a brilliant, ringing bright Guild. Budget is no problem. I'm between a D40 Bluegrass, D50 Bluegras or D55. I'll be willing to buy one of the new Hartford models. Personal opinions invited.

Wow, I wish my budget weren't a problem  . Get a D55.

Or, if you want to go used/vintage, try to find an ash D-46. That's the Guild I think of as "brilliant, ringing bright..." When I was courting mine, a shop owner described it as "sparkling" relative to the "booming" mid-70s D-50 he had in stock. Now having one of each to compare, it was an apt description. It has great balance and projection, with ringing highs and surprisingly nice bass (sort of midway between mahogany and rosewood). To my ear, it's richer and more balanced than my mahogany D-35, maple G-37, or pearwood D-44.

For "brilliant, ringing bright", almost anything EXCEPT rosewood. Maple or possibly ash(don't know about pearwood) will probably be brightest/trebliest, while mahogany will have a punching, mid frequency, not quite as bright, woodier sound.
An archback will give it more bottom & projection, which may be an asset with maple.
Rosewood will give a dark, bottom heavy sound, pretty much the opposite of what you described.

Re: YOUR OPINION PLEASE

Of the three you listed and considering your criteria, "brilliant, ringing, bright," go with the D40. :D

I don't have one but I want one, and one day I'll own one, preferably a 70s or 80s Westerly.

While I love my Tacoma D-55, I would think that a new D-40 would best fit your needs.
Rosewood won't be bright.
Wish I was in your shoes.
I would love to have your dilemma.

I would put the "brilliant, ringing, bright" in the maple category as well.

F-50M, F-47M, JF-30.....
No, no. He's asking about D40, 50, and 55. Don't confuse the man!

  There are plenty-O-Guilds to go around Joe!
We all KNOW that, Graham, but that wasn't the question.
You must do your part to avoid confusion of the masses of GASses here.
We ALL look to you for sage wisdom....not GAS confusion.

If you want bright, then maple would be your best bet, if you like maple. A D40 would be a better choice for an all around guitar, while still being considered bright.......I love mahogany.
