I'm skeptical of the first one. Apparently so were a lot of other folks. Snopes, one wing landing

Up until the actual landing, I wouldn't have doubted it, having seen these planes up close & personal before. But the landing looks pretty unrealistic & "digital" to me.

Seriously, when I was watching this I was expecting him to try to pull a helicopter landing and crumple down on his tail. I've seen these things basically hover like that during maneuvers. It's an amazing sight!

The reaction in the voices of the people around the camera and the sound of the engine which is totally in sync with the picture lead me to believe it's real. I do think if he hadn't been in a stunt plane with tremendous power, he's have never made it. With no lift, the engine kept him afloat just long enough.

The same video is available in the snopes link I posted. It's also on youtube under several other titles from different people.

HMM, just read the "Snopes" article and watched the interview with the pilot. Makes you wonder doesn't it Don? I can't believe how easily video and pictures can be manipulated. Sure is good synchronization between sound, picture, and dubbed RC plane if that's the case.

The founder of this outfit and a couple of his pilots are regulars at our open mike. He hosts a "by invitation" jam in his hangar on occasion, too.

I'm going flying with their director of marketing next Friday, so I'm very happy to believe the one wing stunt plane is a fake.
Pray for me.

Envy!!!!!!!!!! :?

I had always wanted to start aerobatics, but spin recovery is as close as I ever got. No one in my area (convenient geography that is) had the certification to take on students, though one of the premier aerobatic pilots in the country had his hanger nearby. I would love to be able to do one of those combat places for a weekend!

Okay, I'll fess up. We're only flying the marketing director's personal Mooney over to Catalina Island for lunch. No aerobatics. But hey, Don! Air Combat has ten Marchettis that tour throughout the year in addition to their HQ in Fullerton.
They'll be in your neighborhood twice next year:
July 11-13, 2009

He lowered his "tailhook"? Are tailhooks built in to jets that don't land on carriers? Are cable arrestors used on land-based runways? How many carriers are in the Israeli armed forces? I don't see a tailhook in the photo of the rear of the damaged aircraft? Am I just demonstrating my ignorance? :?

As I insert my foot into my mouth I am glad I wore my tasty shoes today.
Turns out I was, in fact, demonstrating my ignorance.
The chief pilot at AirCombat USA tells me he met that Israeli pilot and the story is true.
As he recounted what that fighter jockey had told him, I became convinced. The lifting body of the F-15 was what got him home.

I'm an old timer at that Mark, that's why I tie my shoes with these.

Our cottage is still standing. We got the benefit of falling ash to sweep into our flower beds as fertilizer. Many of my friends were evacuated but none got burned out. A couple of my daughter's teamates did, though. Fires are all at least 90% contained now.

Fly? Oh, yes!! :D Thanks for asking!
