:D Hi,
I'm looking to buy a late 90s X700 and wonder if anybody can confirm the likely weight and dimensions- in particular the nut width please?
Thanks and hope there is some help available.
Regards,

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the boards!

I really love my X700 and can take measurements of whatever you'd like. I think some clarification is in order first, though. See, mine is a '94, which was the introductory year. At its inception, the model was basically a solid, carved top version of Guild's X-500 model, however, sometime around '98 or '99, Guild redesigned the model under Bob Benedetto's guidance.

You mention the guitar being a late '90s example, so it could be either the original spec. version or the Benedetto spec version. Now, that aside, I'm not sure whether or not any of the exterior dimensions actually differ b/w the two. I think the changes may have been more in the area of bracing/construction/f-hole shape... that kinda stuff.

Without taking the guitar out, I can tell you it's 17" wide, neck is fullish and round, but not a baseball bat, nut width is normal (not particularly wide or narrow), guitar isn't a feather-weight, but it's not shockingly heavy or anything (no hollow guitar will be a boat anchor like a Les Paul.) I'd guess somewhere b/w 6-7 lbs, maybe? (Actually, weight is the one thing I can't help you with; I don't own a scale)

Hi kakerlak,
Thank you very much for you kind reply.
The X700 I'm looking at is a '98 Sunburst- so I guess the same measurements as yours. I need to know the nut width please. I'm hoping it'll be 1 11/16ths but it may not be!
I know she'll be knockout plugged in but does she have an acoustic volume unplugged?
I'm unable to test drive this guitar so any help and opinions will be very much appreciated.
Best,
Bob
:D

I'm sorry- it's NOT a Guild Benedetto

OK, mine's right at 1 23/32", so a 32nd wider than 1 11/16"

It does have decent acoustic volume unplugged. It's not stupendously loud, but it's pretty loud and, beyond volume, it has a nice voice. Both unplugged and amplified, it's a jumpy guitar that responds very well to variations in attack. It's one of those ones that makes you want to keep playing and playing once you pick it up. It also kind of makes me start playing things for the guitar after a while. Seems like there are things it wants to do, like pluck a few individual notes soft and pretty and then rip through a chord and quickly stifle it with your palm. Fun to make it talk I guess, but it's got a good vocabulary.

Kakerlak, I'm drooling!! I tend to prefer the more understated sunbursts but there's no denying that's a beautiful guitar.

Archtop Bob, Hello from Seattle! Here is a page on a sunburst '97 X700 currently for sale that has some good information on that model:

I don't think you can guarantee the neck width will always be consistent, but 1&11/16ths" (US) seems to be the default.

They are stunning guitars with a very pleasant acoustic voice, more lively than the laminated X500 but substantially more sedate than a big vintage acoustic archtop. For sitting around playing they're perfect, but to drive a rhythm section you'd want to plug it in.
