Did the X500 ever ship with a sound block under the bridge? I know they have sound posts just north of the f-holes. I'm talking a big ol' rectangular block like on the X170.

Thanks,

GAD

I once owned a 1993 X-500 that I believe had a soundpost under the bridge. It certainly wasn't a big block, but my memory could be fuzzy. Acornhouse can give you the details because he now owns it. The plugged in tone was awesome!

I've got one in my hands with a large rectangular sound post under the bridge. I just wanted to see if it was original.

I seem to recall in a prior discussion out here that it was not uncommon for X-500's of the late 80's - early 90's to have a soundpost under the bridge. Of what year is the X-500 in question?

Ostensibly 1986, but we'll wait for Hans to get back before that's set in stone.

Mine is a blockhead too, but it stays within the confines of the footpad underneath it. Yours looks a little oversized.

That is a really cool photo of the interior of your X500. It is interesting to see the kerfed, rectangular foot-plate glued to the arched back (and probably one on the top as well). I believe that this is the same wood-working technique used to glue the center-block to the top and back of the Starfire IV, V & VI (as well as the ES-335). But the foot-plates and block run the length of the guitar, obviously.

I had noticed the two sound posts "just north of the f-holes" on my '59 CE-100 DP. But I was never sure if they were original to the instrument... or installed by an enterprising previous owner. The type of wood, and the unfinished saw marks, seem to match the parallel (really A-frame) bracing.

The Gretsch 6124 (single Anniversary), listed below, has a true maple trestle that runs from the neck block to underneath the bridge connecting the top to the back. It makes the guitar a lot heavier than the Guild!

I don't play either guitar outside of my living room, so feedback really isn't a problem for me.

Yes, I have had two X-500s with massive sound blocks - both were from 1985. I am told it was from a period where they were getting feedback issues.

Since the top is laminated a soundpost wouldn't, and didn't bother me. Plugged in the X-500 Acornhouse has sounds awesome. If I want an archtop to perform acoustically I will get one with a carved top, thus I got an AA.
