Came back to this awesome archive video today of Sonny Greenwich playing his early Franz equipped X-150 with the Guild Masteramp on Canadian TV. Couldn’t resist sharing it again - such a cool document:

Wow! I’ll be looking into those musicians now! Reminds me of Grant Green, but possibly even more present (and cranked overdriving amp). Very cool.

Glad you liked it! There is a good book about Sonny Greenwich called ‘Stars and Strings’ - it’s a pretty interesting story. He used that guitar and amp from the 1950s to the late 1970s irrc - only ever played single note lines because he didn’t like the way chords sounded with the amp turned all the way up. I’d recommend the Blue Note album he did with Hank Mobley called ‘The Third Season’ -there’s a great band on that and a couple of really killer tunes.

This is Greenwich quoted in general on amp preferences in the book: “it has to be a cheaper amplifier that doesn’t give you very much… I have to force the sound out of it, and that’s how I get the tone, by forcing it. That’s another reason I seldom play chords. These amps aren’t meant for chords. When I play chords, I just get a blare”.

No worries. I did find the book and promptly ordered it from Amazon. There are many CDs and some LPs for sale on Ebay, but not that specific album, for some reason. Maybe it's the most popular one?
