Hi Folks this is my first post so many thanks Don for clearing me through the pretty rigid security steps in place to become a member, all in the name of erradicating spam so I've no problem with that.

Well I've gone and fallen in love with a friend of mines DV-52 Guild and have decided I really want one, however I understand this model is now discontinued so was wondered if you could point me in the direction of which alternative models I should take a look at that are currently available. I do mainly strumming ( neil young type of stuff) occasionally a bit of picking, also I have started to do a few open mics so if there was a model with a pickup this would be good but not really essential as I could always get something installed afterwards.

Also I'm in the UK so unfortunatley don't have the choice off ebay that you guys have got in the states, money wise I will be selling or trading my Larrivee L-09 so looking for something in similiar price range.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Jason

Welcome to the fold, Jason.
If I had it all to do over again, I'd focus my energy on a mid- to late-70s D25M. It's my go-to guitar for "neil young type of stuff."
There you have my 2 bits.

Of course, all the other Ds should suffice, as well.

Best to you,
Joe

A D50 would be a great choice for Neil Young stuff.
You also need to be aware that there are some import[ Chinese] Guilds that are called GAD Guilds.
While these are very nice guitars, they are not the same as the American Guilds.
If you can find any GAD Guilds, give they a try.
The prices are a lot better on them.

That looks like a nice guitar, and a pretty reasonable price. I don't have a mahogany topped Guild (yet), but there are a lot of folks on this forum who rave about them. I predict you'll like it a lot, assuming it's in good condition. As someone else already said, any of the dreadnought Guilds would be a good choice. Good luck, and welcome to LTG.

IMHO the mahogany top is going to provide a somewhat different sound than "Neil" type sounds, as far as I know I have always seen Neil play the spruce tops. But hey - I have been wrong before.

I think the universal advice is to try everything you can get your hands on and then decide. There are often Guilds turning up regularly.

I have not been tracking the UK market so can't say if this is a good deal or not. However, the best thing about Guild's is that you always get more guitar for your money.

Welcome to LTG!! You may get more advice than you actually need.

A D-50 is a good suggestion. It has less adornment than the D-55 model, and in that way is related to the DV-52. A D-50 from Tacoma is a special instrument indeed (I think they were terrific), and I suspect the brand new ones from New Hartford are wonderful too. Another thought would be a DV-6, but don't get one from Ensenada... You'd want to look for one NOS from Tacoma (or earlier).

Of course, there's nothing wrong with pursuing any of these models on the used market. They are out there.

Isn't that around a grand US? That's a bit pricey for a D25 in today's market.

Jason,

If what you really want is a DV52, just be patient.....we'll find you one. They show up on online sites and on ebay from time to time. We actually see them fairly often. Great choice by the way.

Welcome to LTG.

Well, if you REALLY want to sound like Neil... you'll be needing a Martin dread.

However, you can get great tones out of any Guild! I would say the D-50 or D-55 will get you closest to Neil if the headstock must say Guild.

Nothing wrong with an 09 Larrivee either, might be worth holding on to, if possible, Steffan

Hi Yoffer and welcome to LTG; for the other BBers, that's 900 pounds at 1.6 or about $US1,450. I know US stuff is more expensive and for used/offshore, there's shipping and the fee salute to the Queen. The guitar you linked (not the best pics) might sell here for $500-$700 or 310-430 pounds Sterling Moss and about 60 PSM to ship plus saluting Lizzie. Said another way, if you could enlist the help of a BB member here ... you could have a mint D25M at your door for 500 psm. The same proportional math would apply to a DV52. Anyway, if you can hang on a little, maybe look for a US DV52 on ebay or on-line, you might get more here for your money than you would there. Again, welcome. CJ

Welcome Jason, kick your shoes off, relax your mind. I've just purchased a great 1965 Guild M-20 with the assistance of another LTGer. We all really are willing to help you get the Guild of your choice; you'll have it for a long time. If you can find one locally and want our thoughts we're more than happy to give you our humble (and not so humble) opinions! Happy Hunting. joan
