What the heck, I'll play.

We're in the Yacht Club at the 2008 Arlington Guitar Show. We'd been having a blast and Don is sitting on one side of me, while Hans is sitting on the other and we're taking in the great music. I was taking a break and had my prized, my one and only, my much beloved DV72 sitting on a stand several feet away. Someone is performing and the room is just about filled to capacity when in walks this gray haired guy that none of us know from Adam.

The gray haired guy doesn't introduce himself or say a word to anyone, walks through the folks sitting and listening, past Don and Hans and myself to the front of the room. He grabs my    DV72   off the stand and sits down. About that time, my wife happened to snap a picture of my face and it is posted in another thread, though I won't post the thread here in open forum. I think Don began to laugh.

I hope Hans doesn't mind my telling this part, I'll delete it if you do Hans, but I turned to Hans and asked if he knew the guy. Hans sort of smiled a sheepish grin and rolled his eyes and said, "Yes I know him, his name is Adrian something or other and he's one of the owners of Crafter guitars."

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place thinking this guy is incredibly arrogant and really wanting to say, "Excuse me, that's my guitar!!", but I'm in a room full of people and certainly don't want to make a scene. Then he begins to play. I don't know that I have or will ever hear that DV72 sound so beautiful. "Adrian" accompanied several people as the night went on with several different guitars.

It ended up being a non event as "Adrian" took good care of my baby and was eventually asked to play some more.

Just out of curiosity.....what would the rest of you do if this happened to you? :?:

I remember that like it was yesterday and the look on your face. That guy sure could play, but I've never understood how some folks can be so uncourteous. I recall he was from another country, wasn't he? Could be a cultural thing and his impression that because we all had our guitars on stands in the room, they were available. I lent my F212c out to several folks I didn't know that same evening and enjoyed listening to them, but the next year at LTG III, I pretty much kept the JF-30 in it's case as the place got quite crowded during the jam session with lots of drop-in folks we didn't know...

Now I really feel honored that Scratch let me play his 12-string the first night I met him. He might of had second thoughts after seeing me play. Sometimes I've been known to strum quite vigorously!

Thanks again Ken!

Didn't know 'Zeke' could sound that good until you played it, Kurt!! YOU can play any of my guitars anytime... :D :D

As you recall, there were lots of non-LTGers there that night; folks who just dropped in and started playing...

Hello West,

Ha Ha! I sure remember that and I don't mind you telling the story as you experienced it.
I do not remember the 'sheepish grin' part but my girlfriend has told me that I can do that, so it probably did happen!
Anyway, yes I knew the guy and simply because I know him so well, I didn't think anything of it right away. Personally, I would never grab anyone's guitar without asking, but I would trust Adrian to play any of my guitars. Believe me, if I had thought that your guitar was in any danger of getting scratched or whatever, I would have said something.

It's still a good story though!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

:) We'll look forward to seeing you in October. I hope you have enough energy after the show to pay us a visit at the Yacht Club.

Jim, that's a nice story and great pictures there on the other thread.
As I try to think positive: maybe he just kind of misinterpreted the setting/situation.
Nevertheless I think I would have asked twice befor I touched the guitar.
(I hope I behaved right in Arlington last year  - at least Russ still talked to me the next day!)
Markus :)

I'm so sorry I missed you at Arlington last year Markus, it just couldn't be helped. Maybe one day we'll meet. :)

Much depends on the situation you find yourself in. I truly enjoy listening to my guitars in the hands of others, and to this day, have not denied a single request to play mine by anyone, but there are a couple of stipulations. If the guy wanting to play is part of our group, that's a plus. If he is drunk, a definate minus. If you don't know that guy requesting to play your guitar......well I've got reservations about that one. If he had metal all over his pants or shirt.....nope. He could be a non player who has no idea how to treat a guitar, he could be intoxicated, he could for any number of reasons wish to inflict damage on your pride and your joy, or at least not care if he does. He could simply be careless. But there is something truly enjoyable about hearing others play your guitars. A combination of things I think. First, everyone has different styles of play which can make a guitar sound totally different from what we play and normally hear, and secondly, it's rare that were get a hearing perspective from the front of our guitars, and that can truly make a guitar sound quite different to our ears. Mine always seem to sound better in the hands of others.

And that's the other variable.....is the guitar replacable? In my situation, the guitar was not replacable. I will admit to being more protective of the DV72 and DV73, they'll never make them again and there were so few to begin with. The D55 is certainly a top of the line guitar, but readily available both new and used......I'm a bit less protective of it, and so on. I would never dream of walking into a room unannounced and unknown, without introducing myself to anyone and grab a beautiful guitar off a stand and start playing......man that's not only odd.....it's rude. I've got a pile of guitars with which permission is not needed, but do have a couple with which asking permission will get you an extended evening them ........but asking permission is a common courtesy in my book.....especially with something like a limited run guitar.

Funny, but last night this guy was standing in the breakfast room where Grot set up the petting zoo, watching the chaos. He ended up playing my D-50 all night, damn good picker too!
