Lately, I've seen a couple of listings on eBay for a Guild D225, which I'd never heard of:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Guild-D225-AB-A...62?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar&hash=item588871fd02

What is the difference between a D225, a D212 and a D25-12. I know these are all 12 string, arch back, mahogany and spruce dread's, but why have three different names for the same model?? Or am I missin' sumpin'??

Edit: Uncalled for snarky comment removed

That might have been uncalled for. Discussions of Jack typically focus on guitars and music and not footware, although that too has been discussed.

To your questions, I think the first part of the answer comes about based upon time. My searches so far suggest similar guitars made at different times and places often had different model numbers. But I'm afraid we need to wait for someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

I tried to find a corresponding serial number on the Guild Guitar online dating charts and could not. I'd be curious to know what year this D225 from the eBay listing was made ...

Hello Folks,

For the most part Frono is correct. They are all the same guitar but they were all Westerly-made.
It is basically the 12-string version of the D-25 that had gotten the D-212 model designation when it was introduced during the early '80s. With the re-organization of the model names during the 'Gruhn' period, the model was renamed the D-25-12. The D225 model designation was never an official one, but it was the 'in-house' name for the D-25-12 that at some point started to appear on the labels for unknown reasons.
The D225-AB in the eBay auction is from 1998.

Sincerely,

Thanks, Hans! And Frono, too.

Interesting bit of Guild lore, there. The D225 on eBay shows a pretty clear shot of the inside label. I thought at first, perhaps someone had smeared the model number. Doesn't appear to be the case, though,
