WRESTLING - The match between Martin Klein of Russia and Alfred Asikainen of Finland lasted 11 hours.
 I can't do anything that long!

My grandfather made the medal for the 1904 St. Louis Olympics

...and he didn't even get me a T-shirt. Oh yeah, I wasn't born for another 49 years. He (Col. Chas J. Dieges, born 1865 died 1953) timed most of the events from 1904 -1936. He died 21 days before I was born but my grandmother never let me forget that he was the timer when Jesse Owens won gold medals in 1936. Which trashed Hitler's Aryan Supremacy thing. I heard it every four years starting with the Melbourne Games. I wasn't even sure what I was watching (at three years old) but it was a cool place with Kangaroo's and Boomerang's and the people didn't need cars cause they all ran like the wind. It would be more than ten years later before I realised what Jesse Owens started in 1936... Martin Luther King, Jr. finished on April 4, 1968

Tug of War? How come that still isn't an Olympic event, especially when you consider some of the lame stuff that is these days?

I'm with both of you on that! Tug Of War needs to be reinstated. Sure beets Ping Pong and Badminton. I hate to say it but I believe it is to DOWN-AND-DIRTY for the IOC. Certainly, it is not dignified enough for those who don't want to roll in the dirt but what a culmination for the games it would be, with a mud pit in the middle.

Hey, who wants to be my Badminton partner in four years. I have to be honest, I'm not sure I can play it without the beer in the other hand for balance! That will take practice.

C'mon. Badminton deserves some respect. When I was the pudgy kid in high school who hated gym and couldn't do anything well because I couldn't see without glasses, the only thing I actually enjoyed was badminton. That was mostly because I could wear my glasses and when I could see I was usually coordinated enough to deal with the object coming at me. Thus I was closer to the best in class than the worst in class. As a pudgy adult who hates exercise, but knows I should exercise, if I could find a way to play badminton starting out at just a notch above "backyard with brews" I'd gladly do it.

At the next Summer Olympics (four years from now) I will be 62 and I am overweight, Plus I did say (with practice) I would put the beer can down. So, between the two of us, we would be the "Jamaican Bobsled Team" of Badminton. Rio de Janeiro 2016 watch out!

There's a reason that u-of-War was dropped from the Olympics.

(I'm a little surprised this hadn't been mentioned yet as I thought this stuff was well known.)

As for the Badminton, we used to play some pretty competitive games in my friends backyard. I used to come home covered with bruised from being hit with 80mph birdies! We used to play with spiked shoes and goggles. Competition Badminton is a far cry from lobbing a shuttlecock back and forth over the net with a beer in your hand. I wish they had shown more of it on TV.

There is a reason not to cross a busy street against the light but I see thousands of people doing that every day, risking life and limb.
Eighty MPH Shuttlecock bruises! Really! Holy guacamole! THERE GOES MY OLYMPIC DREAM. However, if they can come up with goggles for badminton and the numerous other protective equipment used in Olympic sports, surely there must be a way to make Tug-of-War safe ... and Rules, like no wrapping the rope around your hands (bad idea) and spacing out the contestants on the rope (won't look as good but might save body parts). If it was good enough for the athletes of the ancient Olympics, lets just say the tradition should be carried on.

Anybody want to defend Solo Synchronised swimming...I got nothing.

Now that the Olympics are almost over, NBC has released it's stranglehold on a bunch of videos (it's about time).
Check it out on... http://www.nbcolympics.com/ and look for the Browse Olympic Video section on the right. You will have to endure a commercial before each video but some of it is pretty spectacular. I just wish I could have seen some of this live. I did finally get to see what Olympic Badminton was like. Not as dangerous a game as the guys on the Jersey Shores play. If we had a team from Jersey we would have kicked butt! However, I'm not sure the US even has a Badminton team (again, thanks to NBC). China swept all five Badminton gold medals, which just raises my suspicion that they have the only non-defective made-in-China Badminton rackets.
