So 13 years ago I wrote this song after Mary Fleener said she was going crazy because her husband heard me playing Something Else in my shop and for a week he'd been singing the words "Hairy Rag, Hairy Rag" over and over. Not the whole song, just those words. When we recorded it I naturally wanted her to do the vocal and told her to sing "it's Ray DAVIS this, and Dave DAVEEZ that" to give a nod to that particular "Kink Kontroversy". But of course she pronounced both names as DAVEEZ and as we did it live in one take before an audience that was that.

KINXOUT

I'M NOT CONTENT TO BE WITH YOU
YOU PLAY THE KINKS THE WHOLE DAY THROUGH
AND ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT IT'S MORE OF THE SAME
IF YOU DON'T QUIT-- I'LL GO INSANE
GET THE KINKS OUT NOW
I REALLY DON'T CARE HOW
JUST GET THE KINKS OUT NOW

IT'S A DEAD END STREET WHERE THE NOISE NEVER STOPS
AN AURAL ASSAULT FROM THOSE MOP TOP FOPS
IT'S RAY DAVIES THIS, AND DAVE DAVIES THAT
ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT IN OUR 2 ROOM FLAT

GET THE KINKS OUT NOW
I REALLY DON'T CARE HOW
JUST GET THE KINKS OUT NOW

(BRIDGE)

I'M AT MY END--WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
I FEEL I'VE MET MY OWN WATERLOO
I SHUT MY EYES TO GET 40 WINKS
AND DREAM ABOUT THAT GAP TOOTHED JINX
GET THE KINKS OUT NOW
I REALLY DON'T CARE HOW
THEY'VE REALLY GOT ME NOW

Of course for me, the first time I heard Waterloo Sunset I finally realized I preferred the Kinks to the Beatles and the Stones.

It's our name so pronounce it correctly 😁😁

Oh, I get it ! It's basically pronounced like many other British pronunciations of words that end in "ies" or "y" -- very similar to pronunciations of folks in the American South (which almost certainly originated in England). For example, "I'm hungry (pronounced "hungreh" by many Southerners). God, this is a long way from the Guild Mr. Davies is playing in the video. ;)

One for the road live album was how I got introduced to them.
I can't listen to The Kinks without thinking of my dear departed friend Margaret LoCicero, who I met when she was the promotions director at the also dear departed WLIR FM back in the '80s. She was just a beautiful human, and there has never been a bigger Kinks fan, before or since. I remember her calling me when the band was doing an on-air appearance, and she was absolutely beside herself!

While looking for another music book to answer Rayk in another thread - I stumbled on this one. From 1965

Pictures are not straight due to time and effort to avoid reflections of kitcen light . . .

this band totally rocked. How were they not as big as the Who or Stones?

Because they were on Pye records, and didn't get a lot of promotional push in the States. Combine that with being banned from performing in the US for years, so they didn't become the same cash machine.
