Great video, Brooks! You organized it well and demonstrated a broad range of styles, without hiding the guitars' sounds behind effects. I thought the Starfire IV had a smoother sound, which almost seemed compressed in comparison to the more acoustic sound of the III. I heard notes from the III that I hadn't noticed from the IV, but the III's note definition might actually make it somewhat more distracting in a rhythm track.

As for the thread topic, I frequently experiment with different string sets because it's cheaper than experimenting with different guitars, but the gauge on my Starfires is usually 10 and sometimes 11.

Sorry to bring up an old topic. Do you feel you have to do any sort of setup with tension change when you switch from the 11s to 10? Or does the neck hold well enough.

I have a st newark starfire v. Thinking of trying 10s and then maybe back too the factory 11s.

Well for me, with my '67 SFIV, I had to add a bit of relief to my neck when going from XL110W's with the wound G to Super Slinky 9s.

I wanted to love those D'addarios, but they just didn't work for me, and I play so much better with the 9s.

On my 2001 Starfire 4 I use D'Addario XL 110+. They start with a 10.5 and go 13.5, 18, 28, 38, 48. The Guild has a shorter scale than the Strat which gets regular 10/13/17/26/36/46. The shorter scale means the same gauge strings would have less tension on them so going a bit heavier balances the feel between the two guitars. It also sounded really nice with 11s but bending was more of a problem.
But ultimately it comes down to letting the guitar tell you what it wants, rather than forcing my preconcieved notions on to it,

I had a Jazzmaster that sounded and felt wonderful with 11s and with 9's. But 10's just didn't work right on that guitar. So spend some time trying different things and let the guitar reveal what it works best with
