Treem....I am always open to suggestions for strings....being mahogany I am thinking something in a PB light.

PB lights are good for mahogany! Next set of strings for 12 string (rosewood) is the Rotosounds 11s (PBs). I'll changed them in January.

Hi Treem...the rotosounds are an interesting string. So many string choices...first I will see what the seller has been using as he has a couple more jumbo Guilds in his corral and one of them is another F212XL. He is a hog fan and also has an F212. The photos look like a pb string.
Come on mailman!

OK! Well she finally arrived and Holy Freeholies she has one funky (musty) smelling case! The wood inside the guitar has picked up a bit of the smell too.....so after some internet research she is getting a dose of rice, followed by a stuffing of Boric Acid...yes the stuff that kills roaches also kills fungus and mold...after a few days I will see how the treatment works...I hope it is good because she sounds fantastic! Structurally she is top notch, however she does have some dings and crazing on the top...but I really don't care about that....I just wanna play this magical sounding 12er. No time for pictures yet...she will be at the luthiers for a bit too getting the frets touched up, and the saddle slot cleaned up a bit as well as a new bone saddle.

Here is the Frank ford link http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Luthier/Quickies/RiceClean/riceclean.html
and here is the one that talks about using boric acid instead of baking soda http://theunofficialmartinguitarforum.yuku.com/forum/viewtopic/id/43089
The boric acid is safe and non toxic and odorless.
Boy I tell ya, it is always an adventure whenever I buy a used guitar...but I know this one is going to deliver the goods big time :D

Also consider leaving the case outside in sunlight (whatever there is of it), if that's feasible. I haven't had great luck de-smellifying cases, but your approach seems sound.

Keep the guitar out of the case a while, on a stand in the house... hopefully the smell from inside soundhole will attenuate. I've put rice inside a soundhole too, by the way, with no ill effects. My objective was to clean dust out, but it stands to reason the rice will absorb some odor too.

Hi Ross....I will post some sound clips when she is up and playing.

Chazmo, the case is history...it was beyond desmellifying in my opinion. :(

As for the guitar, after a couple days sealed up with 2 deodorocs (zeolite), baking soda in a swiffer pouch, and some activated carbon from an air filter the smell is barely there (from the soundhole)....Then I poured in about 2 cups of rice 1/3 cup of boric acid powder (got it from the pharmacy), sealed up the soundhole with wax paper and masking tape and then it was shake time. Shook it for all I was worth, took a break and did that another 2 times holding it by the body. Now I don't smell anything coming from the guitar.... but just to be sure I vaccumed out the rice mixture and poured in another cup of boric acid powder and sealed her up...shook again do evenly distribute the powder and now she will sit in the new case for a couple of days. I believe in showing no mercy to mold smells as both Janice and I are highly allergic to them. After the odor has gone the luthier needs to clean up the saddle slot a bit and put in a new bone saddle and clean the fets up a bit.....then, I think i will be set for a long time comming! :D :D :D
Good thing I have my S&P dread 12er or I would go batty without one around to play.

Sounds crazy, but if you put ammonia into a spray bottle and spray it all over the inside of the case, the next day you likely will have no smell, the ammonia smell goes away completely....but don't you be breathing it in....I some times do this to the old recliner, and even the mattress occasionally....Steffan

Ok
I finally fussed with the guitar enough to get it up to snuff...a little saddle sanding, cleaning and nut filing and she is pretty darn tooten now!

I have been ill since the 26th with a cold, fever and sinuses etc. so have not had much up time this week, however the rest and sleep has been great.

Here is a quick recording I did straight into a tascam DR-07 recorder. Just did first verse and Chorus of Ghost Riders in The Sky.

Blue,

That was the warning that you gave me, when I asked about the '67 F212 that I was considering to purchase. Yes, it blew my socks off  ! I have never had an acoustic guitar that ever sounded like my two Guilds do. :D

Hey Fretted
We are lucky to have found these guitars. My fingers are "almost" too sore to play any more.

Here you go! I knew it happened, just couldn't remember with whom and where.... Rockn'roll years taking their toll!
And as another "late bloomer"on Guild guitars, (never even saw one in store where I grew up), I couldn't agree more with you: these guitars have something special about them, and it is carried all the way up on this great site.
