A Guinea was £1,1s, one pound and one shilling, equivalent to £1.05 in modern currency. This was at a time when there were 20 shillings, or 240 pence, in a pound. I had to look this up, but if I had been a little older (probably just a year or two) I would have known this! So, how much is a Guinea?
1.1 Pounds. It made the price look "lower".So, how much is a Guinea?
I have a friend from Yorkshire who is a year or two older than me and he said he had to learn the old system one year in school even though they had already gone to the decimal system.I had to look this up, but if I had been a little older (probably just a year or two) I would have known this!
lol I love this stuff.20 shillings, or 240 pence
I vaguely remember that from my first trips to Britain in the 70s, but quite frankly thought Guineas was a reference to the Binson gear being made in Italy..A Guinea was £1,1s, one pound and one shilling, equivalent to £1.05 in modern currency. Pre-decimal currency seems crazy to me!
Decimalisation was in 1971, but a lot of the old coins remained in use for many years as did the common use of a lot of pre-decimal terms. The Guinea is still used in bidding for racehorses.I vaguely remember that from my first trips to Britain in the 70s, but quite frankly thought Guineas was a reference to the Binson gear being made in Italy..
