In a thrift store this summer, I picked up two sizeable boxes of 78s from the 1920s and 30s for $40.00.
I am slowly working my way through listening to them.
This one is from 1927. It is more interesting because of the singer rather than the music itself.
In some respects, Vernon Dalhart was the father of (nationally and internationally popular) American Country music; although, quite likely if it hadn't been him, it would have eventually been someone else. He was in the right place at the right time.
Ironically he was was a classically trained musician and singer. He had wanted to be an Opera singer and had sometimes worked as one. Before finding fame as a Country singer, he made more than 400 light classical and dance-band recordings.
His massive success in 1924 as a Country singer sent record companies scrambling to the South to look for talent to feed to a nation hungry for more. Indirectly, Dalhart is responsible for the (nation-wide) discovery of Jimmy Rodgers and the Carter Family.
