Interesting that the lead article is about Dan Erlewine, who lives in my neck of the woods, and laid hands on my D4 (he liked it, too!)

Not really adding to the discussion, but one trick I have come across which sometimes works when looking for faded (or even "gone") date/manufacture code markings on old tubes is to stick them in the freezer for a few hours...sometimes the faded codes will magically appear. Just a thought if you are still interested...but in this case, I would tend to agree with others, they look Russian.
