I am interested in seeing who you all admire the most as guitar players. I want to limit it to three but there is always room for ties. Please post a video link if possible showcasing why you admire them.

1.) Phil Keaggy - The veratility of this guy continually blows me away. If you get a chance to see him in concert, do yourself the favor. You only need one video to understand.

2.) Kevin Eubanks - Try to play with more soul, I dare you!

3.) Tim Reynolds - Can be very technical but his solos with Dave Matthews (acoustic) always blow me away.

(^ funky intro goes until 1:00 if not quite your style and want to hear technical skills)

What are yours?

Hey Zach, nice post.

I agree totally with Phil Keaggy. I got to see him play at a church in Grandville Ohio. Went for breakfast in our Inn in the morning and he and Paul Clark.

Agree again with Tim Reynolds, the guy is simply a fantastic guitarist.

My third, at this time would be Doyle Dykes.

I guess my ultimate acoustic guitarists would be Tommy Emmanuel, Doyle Dykes and Phil Keaggy.

Favorite electric guys would be SRV, Clapton, obviously Hendrix and Carlos Santana.

Hey West, could you recommend a Santana song or two I should listen to? Thanks!

Here goes:

1. Roger McGuinn
2. John Cippolina
3. Jorma Kaukonan

Maybe this is based on what genre that I have liked the best.

Graham!

I am extremely jealous you got to pose with the legend himself, Phil Keaggy  (assuming you are wearing the LTG shirt? - sorry in advance if not)! I shook his hand and that was enough to blow me away. It still amazes me how a man with such talent can still be so humble at the end of the day. Go try and shake the hand (or get a picture with for that matter) any rock star these days.

Security will have you flattened before you could even utter "hello sir."

Loving all the names thrown out so far, not one i would disagree with.

It was very kewl indeed.

My wife and I stayed at the Grandville Inn that night and when we came down for breakfast I noticed a guitar gig bag in the lobby. Then Paul Clark came around the corner. Why on earth his guitar, which he described the night before as a having a sinker redwood top from some special tree, cjd-player might be able to fill in the blank spots here, and custom made by Petros, was sitting alone in a gig bag is beyond me.

Anyway I walked up to him and thanked him for the great show. He was thrilled that we were there. He said that Phil would be done any minute that they were heading out for another town that night. Phil came down carrying his Olson in a Calton case, much better IMO.

Very humble folks, what a thrill.

I so happened to have had a JF-30 of mine at the time with us and Paul looked it over and played it a bit.

Graham also has a picture floating around here somewhere of himself and his good friend Doyle Dykes. Nah, both those guys are very personable.....very humble. Have you looked at the size of Graham.....would you refuse to have your picture taken with him  ? I pose every time he tells me to, and sometimes he doesn't tell me, he just takes 'em!

Since I don't idolize anybody, I'm going to put a little different spin on this.

I've always felt that there were three distinct electric rock guitar innovators/revolutionist/influences. And because of them, they changed the way the guitar was played.

The first is Chuck Berry who made the rock-n-roll "riff" famous.

The second is Jimi Hendrix who made distortion famous.

The third is Eddie Van Halen who made shredding famous.

(YMMV)

I can't say there's 3 who are that far ahead of the rest in my personal favorites, so let me just toss out a few names who never seem to get 'nuff respect, that haven't already been mentioned:
Peter Green:

Jeff Beck:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uwvBizKAwc
Wes Montgomery:

That one doesn't show his chops as much as his technique.
Seems like almost all my top 20 favorites are dead... :(
Second the Zappa, Santana, Kaukonen, and Cipollina citations.
Suggest searching guys like Pat Metheny, Ralph Towner (Guild content), John Abercrombie, if you like the jazzy stuff.
Michael Hedges for amazing ACOUSTIC technique:

I cnn appreciate many many players capabilities, but like Ideal, my favorite players are a pretty good reflection of what I grew up with.... 8) Like, there's a lotta great food in the world, but we all got our favorite flavors, right?
Oh yeah, then there's this guy:

Manitas De Plata
Guess I'll go right back to kindergarten and start over again now.
Or maybe hope I get to be him next time around?

Well, usually i like listening to Django Reinhardt, Carlos Santana, or Phil Keaggy, but often I like Eldon Shamblin, Blind Willie Johnson, or Clarence White, other times....

Then there are those two guys who always played together, Robert & Johnson, or Homer Haynes rhythm work behind Jethro Burns as Homer & Jethro,....
