"Yeah, some of those Guilds have arched backs because they're plywood."

"Yeah, those Guilds are heavier because they're overbuilt - won't sound as open as these other ones here."

"Grover Rotomatics. Yeah don't know what to say about that, they're using tuners you usually find on Gibson Electrics for some reason."

"Those early ones with Dearmonds? Poor man's Gretsch. Those later ones with buckers? Poor man's Gibson. Always poor to SOMEthin, har har. Only time they were original were those pointy guitar days of the 80s, and d'ya really wanna go there?"

"Aristocrat/M75/Bluesbird/Nightbird/Blues90 whatever. Just a Les Paul with a cave inside, right?"

"Best thing about those Starfire Basses were the Hagstrom Bi-Sonic pickup - man, scavenge it and stick that pickup in a BETTER bass, y'knowhadamean?"

This is about the place where Graham would have chimed in with a G shield Photoshopped into the image below.

"Guild, you do know those are Gibson seconds". Told to me in 1970 by the manager of the full-line music store that was still trying to sell everythng for list price.

"John Denver only plays them because they pay him to". Except that when he was still pretty uknown, like WAY before "Rocky Mountain High", he had those big Guilds on all his album covers.

"Fender bought them and immediately ruined them by closing the factory". Except that FMIC bought Guild in '95 and didn't close Westerly until 2001. Six years ain't "Immediately" anyway...

Do you find yourself living in the New Hartford bell tower? 8)
That would be great - lay low during that day & then come out at night & play all the just finished Guilds until dawn.

:)

Not sure I could handle the smell 24/7, though. I probably would grow a hump under those circumstances.

A repairman once told me Guilds are overbuilt to avoid warranty issues, all the while appreciating what he was hearing while playing my D50...

I think I would say that that used to be true, at least the overbuilt comment. If "overbuilt" is measured by heft... my late '70s G-312 and early '90s JF-30-12 are the "tanks" in my collection.

As much as I love Guilds, I don't think it's a myth that some of them are overbuilt. I've certainly played a couple that felt stiff and heavy.

The New Hartford Guilds are noticeably lighter than Westerly production, for 12-strings at least. With that lighter weight come tone and volume. A lot different from the older guitars.

Even that's a bit of a "myth"... my '72 D-35 weighs in @ a paltry 4# 4 oz, and my '71 D-44 @ 4# 6 oz. On the other hand, my D-46, D-50, and DV-73 all weigh-in just shy of 6# (5# 12 oz plus). I don't think any of the latter lack in the tone and volume department.

IOW, not all Westerly's are heavy... and not all heavy guitars lack tone and volume.
